Continued: Elizabeth B. Hughes is the daughter of Isaac Hughes and Mary Warne. She was born 30 Jan. 1773, possibly in Hunterdon Co., New Jersey (where her parents were married), Sussex Co., New Jersey, or in Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania. Elizabeth was very likely raise among Quakers but I have not located any records to that effect. Her grandparents, Mathew Hughes (Jr.) and Elizabeth Stevenson were Quakers, and Elizabeth married into a Quaker family. If Elizabeth was not born there, the Hughes family may have lived for a short time in Hunterdon or Sussex Co., New Jersey where her parents owned real estate. Elizabeth's father sold the property in New Jersey sometime after 7 June 1777 when he placed an advertisement in the Pennsylvania Evening Post and gave his address as Walnut Grove, Upper Marion Twp., Philadelphia Co. The family likely removed to Loudoun Co., Virginia by 1781 as Isaac's discharge from the American Army is dated 8 May 1781 was and Signed by Lt. Col. John Alexander of Frederick -now Clarke- Co., Virginia. Elizabeth's father, Isaac, leased a farm from John Thrilkeld at or near Hughesville, Loudoun Co., Virginia 11 March 1789 and purchased that farm 13 Nov. 1800 but Elizabeth was married by then. Elizabeth B. Hughes married Joseph Holmes, son of William Holmes and Mary "Cooe", at Goose Creek (now Lincoln), Loudoun Co., Virginia 4 June 1787. I have not found their marriage in Quaker records, but it likely was by a Friends ceremony as the Holmes family --for generations before and after-- were Quakers, and they would not have been retained as members of the Society of Friends if they married contrary to Quaker doctrine. Joseph pursued agriculture and operated a sawmill in conjunction with his farm in Loudoun Co. He and Elizabeth had 10 children, all of whom were born in Loudoun Co., Virginia. Joseph died 9 Nov. 1817, aged 41 years. He was buried 11 Nov. 1817 near Goose Creek. Elizabeth, left with very young children, likely relied on relatives and her older children to assist her to provide for the family. They attended Goose Creek MM in Loudoun Co. Elizabeth received certificate to transfer from Goose Greek MM to Fairfax MM 16 Dec. 1830. Her son, William Holmes and his family, also were granted to transfer from Goose Creek to Fairfax MM and were received 13 April 1831 with Elizabeth. I am not sure if they actually moved their residence or if they simply changed Monthly Meetings (Elizabeth's son, Isaac, changed MMs about that time as his home was found to be within the scope of Fairfax, rather than Goose Creek, but he did not move). William and his family, including Elizabeth Holmes, were granted certificate to transfer back to Goose Creek MM 15 March 1841. Elizabeth lived as a widow for 29 years, likely with her eldest son, William, until her death 21 Feb. 1847, aged 64 years. NOTE: Elizabeth's sister, Abigail Hughes married William Holmes, Joseph's brother. Their descendants also married into the Nichols and Janney families. NOTE: The children's' birth dates are from Goose Creek MM records.
