Continued: "Phene Hinda, Daughter of Jacob & Tryphena Hinds, was born Jan. 17th 1761." (Original Western [now Warren] Town Record Book, p. [number lost], FHL 861109) Her surname is sometimes spelled "Hines", but is properly "Hinds". Tryphena was the daughter of Capt. Jacob Hinds and Tryphena Keyes of Shrewsbury and Warren, Worcester Co., Massachusetts. Sometime after she was widowed, Phena Walker moved to Michigan and lived with her daughter, Tamar (Walker) Phillips. I have not found Tryphena for certain in the 1840 census. There is only one Walker household in Niagara Co., NY that included a woman near her age: 1840 US Census (Roll 311, p. 86) Lockport Village, Niagara Co., NY Laura Walker 1 female 5-10 1 femal 10-15 1 female 15-20 1 female 40-50 1 female 60-70 There is only one Walker household in Michigan with a woman near this age: 1840 Census (Roll 204, p. 266) Walton, Eaton Co., MI Phineas Walker 1 male under 5 1 male 5-10 1 male 15-20 1 male 50-60 2 females 10-15 1 female 40-50 1 female 60-70 (I suspect that this man may be the one who later settled in Barry Co., Michigan. Judging from the ages, the older woman was probably his mother or mother-in-law.) Ezra G. Phillips died in 1838, and his wife, Tamar, is likely the older woman (ages 40-50) in the household of her son, Boyd W. Phillips, on the 1840 Census in Cassopolis, Cass Co., Michigan. No woman the right age to be Tryphena Walker was located there in a Walker or Phillips household. "Phena" Walker died on 9 January 1849 and was buried in the family plot of her son-in-law, the Rev. William Taylor, in Schoolcraft Cemetery, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan. A 1970 transcription (by Dale Benthin in Kalamazoo, sent to Lorene Phillips) from Tryphena's tombstone was read as "Phena Walker, age 59". However, the age was likely not read correctly, since she would have been a few days shy of 89 when she died in 1849. Published cemetery inscriptions bear this out, and give her full birth and death dates as Jan. 17, 1760 - Jan. 9, 1849.
