Note: e may have been a nanny for the Phillips children after the death of the first wife of Boyd W. Phillips in 1846. It is curious that her surname is given as Phillips in the 1850 census (in Boyd's household), but that they did not marry until 1859--this could have been an enumerator's error. Permillia and Boyd Phllips appear to have divorced betwen 1870 and 1881, as she married (third) Conrad Gulmire in 1881. *** "Permilla Ann Hilton, Cook --was Boyd W. Phillips' 2nd wife, and Mrs. Katy Sherwood was his 3rd wife. --Ezra O. Phillips." (from old Phillips family Bible in posession of Nick Sheedy) *** "Permelia Ann Hilton, the eldest daughter of John W. Hilton, was born in Oswego County, NY, and came to Livingston County, MI with her parents in 1837. In 1850 she was living with Boyd W. Phillips, the father of three sons, and they lived in Allegan County, MI. It is not clear whether Permelia became widowed or divorced, but in 1881 she married Conrad Gulmire, a Civil War veteran, and she received a widow's pension after he died. "There is an 1854 warranty deed which lists Permelia Ann Cook as an heir of John W. Hilton but it is not clear if Permelia was actually married to someone named Cook or if this was just an error by a court recorder. "Ms. Sharon L. Miller of Ravenna, MI, supplied much information about the spouses of Permelia and about Civil War service. Note: Her maiden was Hilton. Her first married name was apparently Cook. Sh
