Note: e that she her grandfather (maternal or paternal?) was one John Fleming (or Flemming) of Maryland. She is supposed to have married first a man named Jones and was widowed. She lived in Pompey, Onondaga Co., NY at the time of her second marriage in 1828. Her findagrave memorial claims her name was "Eleanor Dashiell Jones Phillips". In the will of Elihu L. Phillips (dated 1876 and proved 1884), he left a gold watch that had belonged to Eleanor to her "brother" and his "brother-in-law", John H. Jones, formerly of Memphis, Tenn., and later of St. Louis, Mo. There is no record of the executor locating John H. Jones or delivering the inheritence. This seems a bit strange, if her maiden name was Fleming and her first husband was named Jones; the most likely conclusion is that John H. Jones was actually a brother-in-law of Eleanor (but if so, Elihu probably would have styled him so). I speculate that the watch had been a gift to Eleanor from her first husband (John H.'s brother), which would account for Elihu wanting to lave it to this briother-in-law. She is clearly named as "Mrs. Eleanor Jones" in her 1828 marriage to Elihu L. Phillips, indicating that Jones was her first married name (not her maiden name). And so we are left with a bit of confusion.
