Note: d $119.47 from the estate of Elihu L. Phillips (1800-1884). This indicates that Elihu L. Phillips was a nephew of Elihu L. Phillips (see notes under the latter). Old family letters state there was an "Ellis" Phillips, son of Ezra and Tamar; he is probably actually Elihu. The family Bible gives Elihu Lyman Phillips' name, birth date, and his wife's name. Cass Co., Michigan, marriage records show that Elihu L. Phillips married Ann O. Beech 14 February 1841. He may have been the other young man (age 20-30) in the household of his brother, Boyd W. Phillips, in Whitmanville, LaGrange Twp., Cass Co., Michigan in 1840. I have found no other firm record to show where else this Elihu L. Phillips lived. Elihu L. Phillips appears on the Wisconsin Territorial Census in Metomen Twp, Fond du Lac Co., in 1847. (I had previously thought that this was Ezra's brother, Elihu L. Phillips (1800-1884), but given the fact that the man who bought land in Metomen Twp. in 1848 was from Cass Co., Michigan--where Ezra G. Phillips' family settled--it was probably Ezra's son.) Elihu L. Phillips, of Cass Co., Michigan, patented 120 acres of land in Metomen Twp., Fond du Lac Co., Wisconsin, 1 Feb. 1848 (GLO Document Nr.: 5692; Accession/Serial Nr.: WI1240__.168). The land in Metomen Twp. included the SE 1/4 of the NE 1/4, and the NE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Sec. 5, and the NW 1/4 of the SW 1/4 of Sec. 4 in Twp. 15, N. of Range 14 E, in the district for land subject for sale in Green Bay, WI. Also of interest, "Elisha L. Phillips" (as is is clearly spelled on the original record), patented 40 acres, being the SW 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Sec. 4 of Metomen Twp. in 1849 (GLO Document Nr.: 12607; Accession/Serial Nr.: WI1380__.027). This land bordered Elihu L. Phillips' land on two sides. By 1862, it was all owned by Peter Swartz. It is unclear who this Eliaha L. Phillips was, but he might have been Elihu's uncle Elisha Phillips (b. 1791) or another relative. Very close and east of the land owned by Elihu L. Phillips and Elisha L. Phillips, in Metomen Twp., a man named Lyman K. Walker owned land, and next to him George Walker, both in Sec. 4, Metomen Twp., and an A. Walker owned land east of there in sections 2 and 3--per an 1862 plat. Men named Abel R. Phillips and a Nicholas E. Phillips (unknown if related) were also in Metomen Twp. by 1849. The name Phillips (first initial illegible, perhaps one of the men already mentioned) also appears on a 1862 plat with 40 actes in Sec. 23 of metomen Twp. (It is not clear how or if he is related, but Lyman K. Walker, 56 [b. 1796 in NY], wife Susan and six children were enumerated in Metomen Twp., Fond du Lac Co., WI, 30 Sept. 1850--US Census.) I could not find any Elihu, E. L. or E. Phillips in Fond du Lac Co., Minesota in 1850. There was an Elihu Phillips in Racine Co., Wisconsin in 1850, but he was a different man. Among the probate record of Elihu L. Phillips (1800-1884), an affidavid from Anna Rahling (his long-time housekeeper) states that the elder Elihu's "neice and nephew" lived with him, naming them as Elihu Phillips and Ann Phillips. This nephew would be Elihu L. Phillips (b. 1817), son of Ezra G. Phillips; Ann was the younger Elihu's wife, and not the elder Elihu's blood-neice. Rehling states that Elihu and Ann Phillips were living with uncle Elihu L. Phillips at his farm in Empire, wast of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, prior to early March 1859, and that Ann Phillips was supervising all housekeeping at that time; a woman who was kooking and doing general house-work was leaving and Ms. Rehling was to take her place. About July 1859, Elihu and Ann Phillips left the elder Elihu L. Phillips farm, and moved to Ripon, Wisconsin (about 22 miles west of the city of Fond du Lac). They apparently returned to Fond du Lac by 1860 where Elihu served as a Deputy Sheriff. 1860 US Census (Roll 1408, p. 850) Fond du Lac (2nd Ward), Fond du Lac Co., WI E. L. Phillips, 40, M, Deputy Sheriff, real estate $1,200, personal property $500, b. NY Ann (Phillips), 39, F, b. NY (This is almost certainly Elihu L. Phillips (b. 1817), son of Ezra G. & Tamar (Walker) Phillips, and his wife, Ann nee Beech.) He is very likely the same who shows up in Marshalltown, Iowa, where other members of the Ezra G. Phillips family moved. Perhaps Elihu L. did as well--if so, Ann apparently died before 1870, and he seems to have married second a woman named Joan. 1870 US Census (Roll 410, p. 466) Marshalltown (2nd Ward), Marshall Co., IA Elihu Phillips, 50, Retired Farmer, real estate $2,000, personal property $500, b. NY Joan, 34, Keeping house, b. IL Minnie Burgers, 14, at home, b. PA Paul Smith, 40, Saloon Keeper, b. OH 1880 US Census (Roll 355, p. 148) Marshalltown (2nd Ward), Marshall Co., IA Elihu L. Phillips, 51 (sic), Stock Dealer, b. NY, both parents b. NY (The census index gives his middle initial as "S.", but comparing handwriting on the page, it was certainly "L.") A statement dated 10 July 1889 indicates that Elihu L. Phillips (residence not given) received $119.46 as a Legatee by the will of Elihu L. Phillips (1800-1884). The will and context of the probate record prove that this Elihu L. Phillips was the son of a brother of the elder Elihu L. Phillips.
