Note: ved $119.47 from the estate of Elihu L. Phillips (1800-1884). This indicates that Boughton G. Phillips was a nephew of Elihu L. Phillips (see notes under the latter). His parents' Bible (in possession of Nick Sheedy) show his birth date as 8 May 1828. He was probably born in Niagara Co., New York. The family was living in Parma Twp., Genesee (now Orleans) Co., NY in 1820, and then in Porter Twp., Niagara Co., NY in 1830. Old notes and the family Bible indicate they lived in Lockport, which is just south of Porter Twp., Niagara Co. The family moved to la grange, Cass Co., Michigan, in 1833 or 1834, where his father died in 1838. I have not found the family on the 1840 US Census. His mother re-married The Rev. William Taylor in 1841, and removed to Schoolcraft, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan. 1850 : U.S. Census, Schoolcraft Twp., Kalamazoo Co., MI, p. 196 [I made this note, but don't know if it is right.--NMS] 1850 : Boughton G. Phillips was living with his step-father, William Taylor, in Schoolcraft, Kalamazoo Co., MI (Roll M432_353, p. 98-99) 1850 : U.S. Census, His wife, Anna Maria Thrall, lived in Burr Oak Twp., St. Joseph Co., MI 1854 : Michigan State Census, Schoolcraft Twp., Kalamazoo Co., MI 1856 : Iowa State Census, Iowa Twp., Marshall Co., shows that Boughton Phillips and family moved to Iowa from Michigan within the year. Boughton was noted as an innkeeper, and appears to have been operating an inn with his brother-in-law, Dennis Kellogg. From a Marshall Co., Iowa history Book: Boughton G. Phillips was present 25 Jan, 1859 and among those men bound unto Marshall Co. for $20,000 for the establishment and construction of Marshall County (Iowa) High School. (An H.C. Knapp, and a William E. Walker also signed the bond.) 1860 US Census (Albion P.O.) Iowa Twp., Marshall Co., IA B.G. Philips, 32, M, Laborer, real estate $500, real estate $300, b.
