Note: s: “... Zephaniah, Sr. ... was born in Rhode Island and was one of the early settlers first in Cattaraugus, later in Chautauqua County, N. Y., and after that in Erie County, Pa. Later in life he emigrated to Indiana and died there in Delaware County. He was of English parentage." (Portrait and Biographical Album of Ionia and Montcalm Counties, Michigan, by Chapman Brothers, Edna Harris (1891), pp. 339) Zephaniah Gates married a woman named Abigail (apparently Abigail Griffith). He lived in Manlius, Onondaga Co., NY, as is evidenced by deed records there as early as 1797, and as late as 1812. At least two deeds, dated 1810, were to E. Phillips--probably either his brother-in-law, Elijah Phillips, or a nephew. He also owned land in what is now Madison Co. (probably in Cazanovia), as evidenced by three deeds there. **** Cathy Crowell, of Fayetteville, NY, shared this from her Tavern Tales: Zephaniah Gates, p. 8 (reference is to the Thomas Clark taver "In 1806, Zephaniah Gates sold 18 acres in lot 1 of Sullivan township, Madison county to Peter Westerman. When Westerman conveyed this property on the north side of the Seneca Turnpike to Jeremiah Gates in 1811, it contained a tavern. The tavern was supplied with water by means of “an aqueduct subterranean passage conveyed through pipes of bored logs sunk under the surface of the ground.” The aqueduct was fed by a spring on the south side of the turnpike about one quarter of a mile from the tavern. Westerman reserved the right to take one-fourth of the water at one-fourth the expense of keeping the aqueduct in repair. Jeremiah Gates could go on his land with wagons and carts, could dig up the soil to repair the aqueduct, but Gates was not to injure the premises more than necessary to make the repairs. The old tavern property came into possession of Daniel Gates, later Francis H. Gates and in 1996 was owned by Daniel F. Gates. Following Jeremiah Gates’ purchase, there was no further mention of the tavern in deed records. "Just west of Westerman’s tavern and also in Sullivan township was the Seneca turnpike farm purchased in 1805 from Zephaniah Gates by Thomas Clark. Both the Westerman and Clark taverns were in operation at the same time." **** 1800 US Census (Roll 24, p. 171) Manlius, Onondaga Co., NY Zephaniah gates 1 male under 10 1 male 26-45 2 females under 10 1 female 26-45 1 female 45+ (Note: Zephaniah would have been 44 in 1800.) From a compiled census list, I found that Zephaniah Gates was also enumerated in the 1800 U.S. Census in the present Town of Sullivan, Madison (the Chenango) Co., NY, p. 978, Line 7: Gates, "Zephoniah" 1 male 0-9 2 males 16-24 1 male 25-44 1 female 0-9 1 female 16-24 1 female 25-44 This record was listed under Cazenovia, but a note by the transcriber indicates that this family was enumerated in the present Town of Sullivan, Madison Co. (all immediately west of Manlius & Pompey, Onondaga Co.), New York. There was also a Jeremiah Gates household enumerated in the present-day Town of Sullivan in 1800: 1 male 16-24 1 female 16-24. (Who was Jeremiah?) 1810 US Census (Roll 34, p. 37) Onondaga Co., NY (no town specified, but probably in the Town of Manlius near Manlius Village, as Aaron Wood, Jr. was enumerated two lines above) Zephaniah Gates 2 males under 9 1 male 10-15 1 male 26-44 1 female under 9 2 females 10-15 1 female 26-44 (Note: Zephaniah would have been 54 in 1810.) **** His 1766 birth date comes from compiled published accounts of the Gates Family in Mass. and Conn., citing church records in Preston, Connecticut. The 7 March 1766 birth date was confirmed by the original vital records of Preston, CT. However, Dave (buchroeder@@telus.net) shows a different birth date: Name: Zepheniah GATES Birth: 7 Aug 1770 in New London, Conneticut Death: in Delware, Indiana Wife: Abigail GRIFFITH b: Abt 1797 in Dutchess, New York d. in Delaware, Indiana **** Phillips Stone (Oct. 7, 2004, genforum.com, Gates Forum # 3019) shows: Zepheniah and Abigail Griffith Gates had eleven children: Sally Gates, b. [NOTE: The birth places for the rest of the children are probably guesses, as there is no “Maddison” in Onondaga Co. Madison County is immediately east of Onondaga Co., and Zephaniah Phillips apparently lived in each. It is likely that he lived near the county line. His son Albro was said to have been born in Chautauqua Co., NY in 1819.--NMS] **** (NOTE: It is unclear to me how "our" Gates relate to the the other Gates who resided in the area. Zephaniah Gates and Susannah (Gates) Phillips had a brother, Joseph Gates (b. 1760) who might be the same in the following feeds. They did not have a brother named Joshua or Nehemiah, so if these two are related, it would be by another way.)
