Notes
a. Note:   119.47 from the estate of Elihu L. Phillips (1800-1884). This indicates that L. H. Phillips was a nephew of Elihu L. Phillips (see notes under the latter).
Old family notes indicate that Lyman H. Phillips was born at Manlius Square, Onondaga Co., NY. This is probably correct. But by 1820, the family had moved to Clarkson, Genesee (now Monroe) Co., Ny, and after that to Niagara Co., NY.
I have been informed that a transcription from his grave stone in Ann Arbor, Michigan, shows a death date of 2 Feb 1894. Information from Pat Cross also indicates a death year of 1894. (However, other old family notes give the death date as 10 Feb. 1894 and 10 Feb. 1904, which are probably erroneous.--NMS)
The 1927 letter from Grace (Phillips) Colby states, "He kept the Ontario House and another time the McKnight House in Youngstown, N.Y., and the Phillips House at Lockport, N.Y. Moved to Two Rivers, Wisc. 1854, and kept the Lake House; was postmaster at Two Rivers from 1861 to 1865, and [?] Deputy [?] ther at one time.
Pat Cross shared this chronology of Luman Hubbard Phillips:
 • Lived in Youngstown, Niagara Co., NY and kept "McKnight House."
 • Moved to Lockport, Niagara Co., NY and kept "Phillips' House."
 • Moved back to Youngstown, [Niagara Co.] NY, and kept a grocery store and a hotel.
 • Moved to London, [Ontario] Canada and kept a hotel.
 • Returned to Youngstown, [Niagara Co.] NY and kept a hotel.
 • Moved to Ohio City (now Cleveland), Ohio and kept a hotel.
 • Returned to Youngstown, [Niagara Co.] NY and kept a hotel.
 • Moved to Buchanon, Michigan and kept "Fremont House" from 1860 to 1861.
 • Moved to Two Rivers, [Manitowoc Co. ] Wisconsin and kept "Lance house" at Portsmouth from 1861 to 1865.
 • He kept a store and was Post Master [at Two Rivers] during the Civil War.
 • At one time, he apparently also moved to or through Port Huron, Michigan.
 • Left Two Rivers, Wisconsin in the spring of 1866, and moved to "Aunt Nancy's" at Ann Arbor, Michigan for a year. (Nancy must be his daughter, Agnes.--NMS)
 • Moved to Detroit, Michigan, where his wife [Jane] died 25 Sept. 1867.
 • Returned to Ann Arbor, and then moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan where he married Christina McCray.
 • He returned to Ann Arbor after his second wife's death, and lived with his daughter, Sarah, until his death in 1894.
 • His body was buried in "Dix Varo" (Sp?) Cemetery [Oak Grove Cemetery, Dixboro, Washenaw Co., MI] where his wife, son Jasper, and daughter Dorothy were also buried.
Another anecdote passed along by Pat Cross recounts:
"Grandfather and Grandmother [Lyman H. and Jane (Greenset)] Phillips had an escaped slave--who came through the underground railroad route--who lived with them and helped to bring up the children. They took her with them to Two Rivers, Wisconsin. On the boat, the stewardess died, and the Captain asked if "Aunt Sophronia" would help them and make return trip, and he would bring her back. They never knew what became of her, and she never came to Two Rivers.
"Grandmother [Jane] Phillips was a very kind and benevolent woman. The Indians begged food of her at Lake House, Wis. They would say Jane is a good squaw, but Lyman is a bad Indian."
Lyman H. Phillips purchased a burial lot in Oak Grove Cemetery, Dixboro, Washenaw Co., Michigan, 6 Oct 1867. (This was two weeks after his wife, Jane, died.)
This cemetery is on the main highway (Plymouth Ann Arbor & Dixboro Roads) on the west side of Dixboro, MI: Superior Twp, Sec 18; Lat: 42° 18' 42"N, Lon: 83° 39' 40"W
 People named Phillips buried there:
