It is very curious that John Phillips was noted as "Jr." in this marriage record. This fact does not necessarily mean he was the son of a John, but rather there was an elder John Phillips living in town, and Sr. and Jr. was used to distinguish the two in records. This was sometimes the case, even when two individuals of the same name were not even related.
The Rhode Island census of 1774 shows the following family, living at Smithfield, which is probably the same:

4 males 16 and older 3 females 16 and older 2 females under 10 years old Brief secondary research indicates that Mercy Pain, who married John Phillips in 1744, was the daughter of Gideon and Rebecca Pain. Gideon Pain died 7 Jan. 1756 in Smithfield, RI, and left a will dated 29 May 1754: Gideon named his wife, Rebecca, as sole Executor. He named two sons, Gideon and John, who were under age 21 to receive his homestead after the death of Rebecca, and they were to pay another son, William, 200 pounds when he comes of age 21. Daughters named were *Mercy Phillips, *Freelove Phillips, and Zabina Kimpton, each to receive 20 shillings. And daughters Urania Paine and Sarah Paine were to receive fifty pounds each when they become age 18. (See Probate Records at Central Falls, RI, Vol. I (under date of 1756), pp. 185-191)
*According to secondary research, Freelove Pain, daughter of Gideon and Rebecca Pain, married Joshua Phillips, son of James and Mary (Mowry) Phillips. (It is also claimed that this Joshua Phillips was the son of John and Elizabeth (Drake) Phillips, of Shawbury, Shropshire, England; Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts; and Easton, Bristol County, Massachusetts). Either way, Joshua and Freelover (Paine) Phillips removed to Rutland, Mass. in the 1760s, and he died there about 1794. If his parents were James & Mary (Mowry) Phillips, Joshua Phillips (b. abt. 1704) was an uncle of John Phillips (b. 1723), and their respective wives (Freelove Pain and Mercy Pain) were sisters.

Central Falls, RI Court House, Deeds, Vol. 4, p. 234: Joshua Phillips of Smithfield, RI sold land to Benjamin Brown of same on 11 Feb. 1758 for 240 pounds. His wife, Freelove, made her mark.
