Notes
a. Note:   his middle initail, G., probably stood for Gates. Old family notes give his wife's name as Maria? Hershey. The 1850 census shows his wife's name as Sophia, and she appears to be the same womaan, "Sofia Philipe" operating a boarding house in Buffalo in 1860, with their children and an elderly Solomon Hershey in the household.
The 1927 letter from Grace (Phillips) Colby names children:
Nora Charlie Eugenia, married a Lyons John (NOTE: the name Sophia appears in census records; she is probably the Nora listed by Grace.)
He is probably the John Phillips, Jr., enumerated in Lockport in 1830 (see notes under his father).
He is probably the John G. Phillips in Lockport in 1840, and the John Phillips, innkeeper, in Lockport in 1850. The ages given for the children in 1840 correspond with the ages of the children in 1850.
There were two men named John Phillips in Lockport Village, Niagara Co., NY in 1840:

"John G. Phillips" was Undersheriff in 1843. (see: land/deed record "333 Main -- 1 May 1843" -- for the Town of Porter or Youngstown?)
Protecting Niagara, A History of the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, by Chief Deputy Christopher J. Carlin, p. 49-50, gives an account of John Phillips, who served as Sheriff of Niagara County 1827-1830. Unfortunatley, he indicated to me that his source may have been a bit confused. The following part of his account probably refers to the son of Sheriff John Phillips (1779-1847):
"... John Phillips [son of Sheriff Phillips] became a constable in the Town of Lockport. After serving as undersheriff for Sheriff Theodore Stone from 1840-1842, Phillips moved to Buffalo and operated the Sheldon House, a hotel for travelers. [Sheriff] Phillips’ son Thomas remained in the Town of Porter to operate the Ontario House, which still stands on Main Street in Youngstown.
“John Phillips contracted typhoid fever and died on July 8, 1852.” ****
The fact that John Phillips, innkeeper, and his family were enumerated in Lockport, Niagara Co., in 1850, and he is presumably the same who died in 1852, offers about a two-year window for them to have moved to Buffalo, Erie Co.
The claim that John Phillips operated a hotel in Buffalo named the Sheldon House offers a clue that he probably actually lived in the community of Tonawanda, just nort-east of Buffalo proper. The Sheldon House is very likely the same hotel mentioned 50 years later in The Red Book of Niagara, by Irving P. Bishop (Buffalo, NY : 1901), pp. 77-78:
“After leaving the City [Buffalo, New York] we reach in about fifteen minutes Tonawanda (population 7,421), separated by Tonawanda Creek and the Erie Canal from North Tonawanda (population 9,069), the two towns constituting one of the largest lumber ports in the world. (Best hotel here, the Sheldon House, North side.)”
To avoid confusion, there were at least four other people named John Phillips enumerated in the Buffalo, NY, area in 1850:
John Phillips, 45, a coppersmith, b. England, and his family were in Ward 5 of Buffalo.
John H. Phillips, 43, and family, including a son John Phillips, 13, in Tonawanda, Erie Co., NY.
John Phillips, 33, with wife Angeline, 40, also in Tonowanda, Erie Co., NY.
The Commercial Advertiser for the City of Buffalo (Jewett Thomas & Co., 1850), p. 225, lists only one John Phillips.

John's widow, "Sophia Philipe", is undoubtedly the same woman who was running a boarding house in Buffalo--her children all seem to be present: Sofia (Phillips) Bangin (?), Charles Philips, "Ewgen" (Phillips) Lyons and her husnabd Richard, and John "Folips"; and note that a Solomon Hershey, 80--perhaps her father--also resided there:
