Notes
a. Note:   ork, executors of the estate of Thomas Phillips, signed a receipt, dated 29 July 1889, that they received $119.47 from the estate of Elihu L. Phillips (1800-1884). This indicates that Thomas Phillips was a nephew of Elihu L. Phillips (see notes under the latter).
Thomas' middle name was probably Aaron.
In an e-mail to the list "PADUTCH-LIFE-L@@rootsweb.com, dated 19 April 2000, Vee Housman wrote:
"Thomas Phillips lived on Main Street in Youngstown, NY,--as early as the 1840s--probably right on the Niagara River, right across from Canada. ... he showed up on the local 1840 census with a Free Colored male in the household between the ages of 24 and 36. Wow! That was the subject of a speaker at our [Town of Porter] historical meeting this past Monday! [We] wondered if [Thomas Phillips] played a part in the Undergorund Railroad. ... in the early records of the town [of Porter], it showed that on of [Thomas Phillips'] neighbors was Olaf Hathway, and in an old newspaper aritcle that I read, Olaf had used his row boat to transport runaway slaves across the river to freedom in Canada."
Vee Housman noted numbers next to each person in this family; these numbers may refer to Town of Porter vital records or ??:

There is apparently a cemetery behind a Presbyterian Church in Youngstown. But from what I gathered, the old church building was no longer used by the Presbyterians.

Attached to the 1927 letter from Grace (Phillips) Colby, is a note written by Rollin Park Phillips, which mentions how his grandfather, Thomas A. Phillips, had to go to Rochester, N.Y., with a bag of wheat astraddle a horse, to have it ground into flour, and was only given one week to make the round tip back to Youngstown. He also mentions something about (John or Thomas ? Phillips) operating a store about 1844, after which the 50 acre farm on East Avenue was purchased from the "Fischer Interests", Low & High Fischer, who had purchased the property from the Holland Land Company.
Note:   Josephine M. Phillips and Samuel Shipper, of Porter, Niagara Co., New Y
