Note: rother Elias was born in 1783, I will say Stephen was probably born in 1785. Transcriptions from the old family Bible (now lost) indicate that he was born in Halifax, Vermont, but his birth is not recorded in the Town Books there (two of his older brothers' births are recorded there). He may have died young. I have found no record of a Stephen Phillips about this age in Onondaga Co., NY, nor of a Stephen Gates anywhere else in western New York who seems to fit.
