Stewart aged 13, and Leonora Stewart aged 9. 1900 census Dayton Twp., Butte, CA: Nora Sutliff aged 62, born Aug. 1857, birthplace KY; daughter Sinthe aged 35, born March 1865. 1910 census Dayton Twp (Durham) Butte, CA: Listed as Lenorah Sutliff aged 67, birthplace KY, both parents KY; and daughter Cynthia P. Sutliff aged 40, birthplace MO; father OH and mother KY. Chico Daily Record, Tuesday Morning, October 14, 1902, pg 4 col 1: "Mrs. Sutliff's Home Near Durham Burned. The home of Mrs. L. M. Sutliff, situated about two and a half miles west of Durham, was destroyed by fire at an early hour Saturday morning. Mrs. Sutliff and her daughter were soundly sleeping at the time the fire started. The daughter first awakened, and only in time for them to both get out of the house without harm, and they were forced to leave in their night robes. Nothing was saved. "The fire started in a bunk house near the residence, and spread from there to the residence, smoke house and storehouse. In the smoke house and storehouse were a considerable quantity of hams, bacon and family provisions, besides a quantity of almonds and various other articles. "Mrs. Sutliff estimated her loss at about $1,000. The only insurance was on the house, $500." Sunshine Valley News, Biggs, CA, Friday, Jan 6, 1911, pg 4: "Wants To Be Guardian Of The Hensley Children. Grandmother of Children in Gridley Wants to Secure Children From Their Mother. "Oroville, Cal., January 4, 1911. Mrs. Leonora Sutliff, of Gridley, petitioned the Superior Court on Saturday that she be appointed guardian of the Hensley minors. An order was made directing Mrs. Edward Brookes, the mother of the children, to appear on January 16th to show cause why the petition should not be granted. "The Hensley children are grandchildren of the petitioner and are brothers and sisters of Mildred Hensley, who has had her stepfather and Otto Cochran arrested upon charges of criminal assault." OBITUARY - THE CHICO ENTERPRISE, Saturday Evening, January 2, 1915: "Mrs. Lenora Sutliff Dies at Home In Durham. Mrs. Lenora M. Sutliff, one of the best known residents of Butte county, died at her home in Durham yesterday morning at 11 o'clock. Death was sudden and was due to heart failure. The funeral will take place at 10 o'clock Monday morning from the Durham church, with Rev. M. Katzmiller officiating. Mrs. Sutliff was 76 years of age. She was born in Woodford county, Kentucky and came to California, across the plains in 1864. She was married twice, her first husband dying while crossing the plains. The second husband died twenty years ago. She is survived by five children, Van Cleave Sutliff, Mrs. Coon, Miss Cynthia Sutliff, Mrs. Mary Atterberry and Mrs. Lenora Brook. The funeral will be in charge of the Engle Undertaking parlors." Cynthia P. Sutliff was the Administratrix of her mother's estate (Lenorah M. Sutliff, formerly Lenorah M. Stewart). On March 14, 1916 there was a distribution of Lenorah's estate, which consisted of $7,430.62 in cash and property described as "All that certain real property situate, lying and being in the County of Butte, State of California, and particularly described as follows, to-wit: The Southwest quarter of the Northwest quarter and the Northwest quarter of the Southwest quarter of Section Twenty six (26), Township (21) North, Range One (1) East, M.D.M., containing Eighty (80) acres of land, which was appraised at the sum of $250.00 per acre; also a strip of land Twenty-four (24) feet wide on and across the North side of the South East quarter of the North West quarter of Section Twenty-six (26), Township Twenty-one (21), North, Range One (1) East, M.D.M. One-fifth of the estate went to V.C. Sutliff, a son 57 whose residence was unknown at the time; Clara Coon, a daughter, deceased - Emmett Coon, Administrator of Clara's estate; Cynthia a daughter 53 residing in Durham; Mary M. Atteberry; a daughter 47 of Dayton; and Nora Brooks, a daughter 44 of Durham. The land was partitioned into five parcels on 30 October 1916. See each heir for description of property inherited.
