Chico Record (Chico, California) 26 Feb 1929, Tuesday Page 2: "Mrs. L. H. Coon Honors Husband --- Mrs. L. H. Coon entertained a number of friends on Saturday evening in honor of her husband whose birthday it was. The party was a complete surprise to Mr. Coon and after the guests had all arrived tables were set up for cards. "The evening ended with the serving of a delicious birthday supper. Mr. and Mrs. Coon's guests included, Messrs and Mesdames Ryon Semrau, E. Fairfield, Jesse G. Coon, Martin Miller, A. T. Coon, George Woodman, Sam Decker and William Holland, Misses Ida Fuller, Louise Vermette, Karma Coon, Cleadys Coon, Adele Coon and Mary Decker, Albert Vermette, Howard Jenkins, Elden Coon and Conrad Semrau." CHICO ENTERPRISE-RECORD, December 1959: "L. H. Coon, Native of Durham, Dies. Death claimed Lemuel Hugh Coon, 72, widely-known Durham rancher, early this morning at Rheingans Hospital in Paradise. He had been stricken with a heart attack on Nov. 12 and his wife and daughter had been at hi side since then. "Mr. Coon, the second oldest son of Emmett and Clara Bell Coon, who were early pioneer settlers, had spent his entire life on the place where he was born on Feb. 21, 1887. Following his schooling he engaged in farming and almond growing until three years ago when ill health forced his retirement. "He was an avid hunter and fisherman and belonged to the Chico Rod and Gun Club. He also took an interest in community activities and was a member of the Durham Farm Center and served as a member of the Durham High School Board of Trustees. "Surviving Mr. Coon are his wife, Clara E. Coon of Durham; a daughter Mrs. Karma Bauer of San Bernardino, a grandchild, Jeanie Bauer, who is a student at the University of California at Davis, two brothers, Jesse G. and Allen T. Coon, both of Durham, and several nieces and nephews. "Funeral services will be conducted in the chapel of the Brusie Funeral Home Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. and interment will be in the family plot of the Chico Cemetery." On February 18, 1916, Emmett Coon sold to his son L. H. Coon a parcel of land for Ten Dollars ($10) in gold coin described as follows: the East Twenty (20) acres of the South half (S1/2) of the Southwest quarter (SW1/4) of Section Twenty six (26), Township Twenty one (21) North, Range One (1) East M.D.B. & M. It is understood that a strip forty (40) feet in width off the North end of said Twenty (20) acres has heretofore been conveyed to the County of Butte for road purposes. DURHAM NEWS, Friday March 29, 1935, pg 1, col 2. "About Town." “Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Coon were hosts to a group of their friends last Saturday evening at their home west of Durham. Mrs. Coon’s birthday was the occasion for the delightful affair at which she was presented with a surprise birthday gift by the group. Contract bridge was the diversion for the evening, after which supper was served. Mrs. Z. Hobson made the birthday cake, which was beautifully decorated for the hostess. The house was attractive with japonica, bridal wreath violets and marigolds, which were much admired by those attending the party. Those present to congratulate Mrs. Coon were Messrs. and Mesdames R.R. McEnespy, J.Q. Colm, W.W. Wahl, Z. Hobson, C.A. Schab, Ed. McEnespy and the host and hostess.”
