Chico Record, Friday Morning, November 8, 1918, pg 5 col 6: "G. C. Ricketts New Durham Constable --- G. C. Ricketts of Durham was elected constable of Dayton township by a vote of fourteen over his nearest opponent, Constable J. A. Franklin, according to the complete returns. W. E. Coon ran a close third in the race. "Constable Franklin, incumbent, was a candidate for the office only on the insistence of a number of friends, and congratulated his successor on his election. "Franklin has a 200-acre ranch and other business interest which require practically all his time." The Chico Enterprise, Chico, CA, Tuesday Evening, September 20, 1932, pg 2: “About People You Know. Durham - Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Coon and son, Emmett and Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Chamberlain and daughter, Miss Nina motored to Chaparral to spend the week-end.” SANDY GULCH NEWS, Thursday, May 25, 1939: "Durham News. Bill Coon Crabs At Heavy Sandwiches. The Durham folk enjoyed a nice dance Saturday night and a nice midnight supper, too, but Bill Coon had to find fault with the chicken sandwiches. "George Jones, after eating a sandwich, picked a bird shot out of his store teeth and showed it to Judge McAnarlin who had just done the same. R. M. McEnespy produced a battered bird shot but we forgot to note what kind of teeth Mc wears. None of these men complained, you understand, just compared shot. "Bill Coon butted into the triangular circle and held out four shot but stopped complaining when the boys accused him of eating four times. "The chairman of the feed committee claims he always shoots his chickens as it is lots quicker --- and surer --- than a hatchet." Four years later William Coon (Bill) was accidentally shot while hunting. His leg wound became infected and gangrene set in. He refused to have his leg amputated resulting in his death. CHICO ENTERPRISE-RECORD, 1943: "Wm. Coon Dies of Wounds Received Pheasant Hunting. William E. Coon, 53, of Durham, died at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Enloe hospital as the result of a hunting accident November 28 on the ranch of E. L. Adams south of Durham.-----Coon was born in Durham, Nov. 11, 1890, the son of the late Emmett Coon who came with his parents by wagon train from Coles County, IL. William Coon was born on the place his grandparents had homesteaded.-----He attended the Durham schools and farmed a number of years before he joined the Durham warehouse firm. He had been manager for 28 years prior to his death.-----He married Emma May Ford on Jan. 10, 1917, and their one son Emmett, a private first class in the Army Air Corps, is now stationed at Mather field.-----Surviving him are his wife, his son, and a granddaughter, Judith Lynn, and four brothers, Jesse G., Lemuel H., Allen T., and Homer A. Coon all of Durham.-----Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2:30 in the Nugent funeral home. The Rev. Harris Pillsbury of Bidwell Memorial Presbyterian church will officiate. Burial will be in the Chico cemetery." Subsequent article: "Rites Held for Accident Victim "Many friends gathered this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at Nugent Funeral chapel for the services of the late William E. Coon, widely known warehouse manager at Durham, who died after a hunting accident which happened the opening morning of pheasant season. "Rev. Harris Pillsbury of the Bidwell Memorial Presbyterian church officiated at the rites, during which Roy Jefferies sang "Crossing the Bar" and "Sometime We'll Understand" accompanied at the organ by Mrs. D. D. Erwin. "Interment was in the Chico cemetery with the following close friends acting as escorts: W. W. Wahl, Charles Schab, R. R. McEnespy, W. B. Wageman, C. E. Ray, A. M. Strong."
