a. Note:   itz. George was the youngest of seven children being preceded in death by his six siblings: Gladys C. Wales, Lavina B. Croft, Charles F. Gritz, Lester, C. Gritz, Orril T. Gritz and Thelma R. Leming.
 George attended public schools in Fall River, Kansas and graduated from high school in 1932. He played football, basketball, pole vaulted and ran track.
 George moved with his family to Manzanola, Colorado in 1938 to raise cantaloupe. He moved to the San Luis Valley in 1939 and farmed in the Mesita area for 30 years. Drilling water wells became his profession in 1950 and he drilled hundreds of domestic and irrigation wells in the southern San Luis Valley and northern New Mexico until his retirement in 1980.
 George loved the outdoors and especially fishing and fly-fishing. He spent several winters in Texas, Mexico and Arizona fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, Gulf of California and the Colorado River. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. He also loved and enjoyed the time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
 George is survived by his treasured friend Mary Eisele of Alamosa; his children: Joan Harrison of Denver, Richard (Judith) Gritz of Alamosa, Jane (Dan) Cowan of Macon, Georgia, and Nina (Len) Zobel of Frederick, CO; as well as 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
 He is preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, his daughter Vera L. Anthony and his granddaughter Vicky Anthony.
 A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, November 4th and a Funeral Service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, November 5, 2010, both at the Rogers Family Mortuary in Alamosa. Interment will follow services in the Mesita Cemetery. Contributions are suggested to The Gideons International, P.O. Box 1412, Alamosa, Colorado 81101 to help distribute Bibles.
 Rogers Family Mortuary of Alamosa is in care of the arrangements.
Note:   LA JARA - Longtime La Jara resident George Maurice Gritz, 96, passed away on November 1, 2010 in La Jara, Colorado after an extended illness. George was born October 13, 1914 in Fall River, Kansas to Franklin Luther Gritz and Lillie Jane Caulk Gr
