10609578.pdf May-15-1903 Terril (Iowa)Tribune COOPER BLOW BURNED OUT
Practically Everything Burned-- Family Thankful to Escape with Their Lives.
Last Saturday afternoon J. S. Blow received a telegram from his brother, C.J. at Sterling, N.D. saying that a prairie fire had burned everything. Later a letter arrived stating that the stock was all right with exception of two calves. Mr. Blow wrote that the fire burned faster than he could drive the team; and if he had had far to drive to escape the devouring monster the whole family must have perished. The following is from a letter written by Mrs. C. J. Blow, May 8, to relatives here.
"It was very windy here yesterday, in fact it blew a gale, and at noon the train set fire to the grass along the track, and the head fire came sweeping down on our place, not leaving us time to do anything. We tried very hard to save the buildings, but found it impossible, all we saved was our feather beds, pillows, some quilts, the stove and our good clothes. My good shoes and every day clothes are gone and not a dish left. We saved our cattle and horses. It burned up all our wagons but one, also the buggy. Ma's hat burned, too. We are all used up this morning. Cooper burned his face quite badly, and my eyes are so sore I can't see very much. It was hard work to save our lives. I thought once that Ma (Mrs. Wolla) and Keith were gone--smothered by smoke and heat. I tell you it was a terrible experience. Will write again soon."
Earl Blow and Mrs. Wolla arrived there just in time to take part in the excitement -- in fact it may be said they received a "warm reception".
In all probability the loss, which amounts to nearly $2,000, will not be a total one for C.J. and J.S. Blow, as they will undoubtedly be able to get damages from the Northern Pacific railway, the company being responsible for the fire, and the section men will testify to that fact. The Blow ranch is about eight miles from the railroad.
9-4-1903 - Terril Tribune - Chris Wolla returned last Saturday from a trip to Boyd, Minn.. He reports that J. R. Johnson, formerly of this place was threshing and that his wheat yielded twenty bushels per acre and oats were yielding fifty-five bushels per acre. Mr. Wolla's mother returned with him.
9-4-1903 Friday - The Terril Tribune - Mrs. Chris Wolla and son, Herman, moved into their residence on Third street Wednesday. This is the dwelling just north of John Green's residence.
