Russell, Rt 3, Britton, Marshall Co., SD The unorganized territory in Marshall County was a one mile wide strip stretching from the western boundary of the county east for 6 miles For many years it was not a part of any standard 6 mile by 6 mile western township as regulated by U.S. Congress at a much earlier date. When the county townships were surveyed because of a "notch" in the most northeast corner of South Dakota it caused a strip across the state which did not fit into neat 36 square mile townships. A further complication was an Indian reservation in the county could not by law be included in a township. As result of these two problems, this strip of land did not get included in any township. For many years, the surrounding townships strongly resisted attaching the strip to their respective townships because the citizens believed the taxes it would bring would not cover the upkeep costs of the strip. Finally, I believe in the late 1920's, this strip was finally incorporated into another neighboring township. If you have a map, find the little town of Amherst. This strip of land is about three miles north and runs from the west county line for six miles.
