Note: 1920 - boarding with Karl Eberle. WWI draft reg - single, helping to support his mother, medium height and build, brown eyes, brown hair. John Scharfogel, 72, a native of Germany and a resident of Santa Cruz since 1936. died Friday in his home at 812 Sumner street. He had come here from Amherst, Neb., where he had lived more than 30 years. He was a veteran of World War I and a retired carpenter. He was a member of Santa Cruz Post 64, American Legion, and Santa Cruz local 829, Carpenters union. He was an active member of the Messiah Lutheran church. He is survived by his widow, Marie Scharfogel; a daughter, Mrs. James (Doris) Swartz of San Jose; three sisters, Mrs. Elsie Marks of Santa Cruz, Mrs. Hilda Stebbins of Lincoln, Neb., and Mrs. Anna Glover of Hemet; a brother, Fred Scharfogel of Hazard, Nez., and a grandchild, David Swartz of San Jose. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Wessendorf and Thai chapel with Rev. Herbert F. Schmidt of the Messiah Lutheran church officiating.
