Note: Obituary notice --- Sparta lost one of its most beloved and conscientious citizens with the passing of Carl E. B. Johnson, 71, of 69 Pleasant St., on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 6. Mr. Johnson was born January 11, 1890 in Sparta Township where he lived all of his life. At the time of his retirement in 1958 he had been in the hardware business for 43 years. He and his brother, David J. Johnson, President of the Village of Sparta, owned and operated Johnson Bros. Hardware. Mr. Johnson, an Army veteran of World War I, was a charter member. and past commander of Lekstrum-Burnett Post No. 107, American Legion. He is Past Master of Sparta Lodge No. 334, F. & A. M., and a member of DeWitt Clinton Consistory and Kent Chapter 106 R.A.M. He also was a member of the Knights of Pythias. His community activities included past presidency of the Sparta School Board, membership on the Sparta Village Council and a Sparta Township Treasurer. Mr. Johnson was a life member of Mamrelund Lutheran Church were funeral services were held Saturday afternoon. Arrangements were by Hessel Funeral Home. The Rev. Kenneth Swanberg officiated and burial was in Greenwood Cem- etery. Survivors include his wife, the former Mabel E. Stream; one daughter, Mrs. Lawrence W. D'Amour of Sparta; one son, Carl -Ward Johnson of Palos Verdes Estate, Calif.; six grandchildren; one brother, David J. of Sparta, and two sisters, Mrs. Roy Goodfellow and Mrs. Orrin Johnson, both of Sparta. SPARTA-Carl E. B. Johnson 71, retired Sparta hardware dealer, died unexpectedly at his home Wednesday. Mr. Johnson, a World War I veteran, was prominent in Masonic circles here. He was formerly president of the Sparta School Board, member of the Township Council and township treasurer. He was a member the American Legion. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mamrelund Lutheran Church, Kent City, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. The body is at the Hessel Funeral Home here.
