Note: If you are descended from this family, I would love to hear from you. James M Green was the son of William and Ann (McCleskey) Green. James was born January 15, 1795 in the Pendleton District of South Carolina. He was just 6 years old when his father died. Perhaps inspired by duty, a sense of adventure, and his father's Revolutionary War tales, James joined the Georgia militia during the War of 1812. He served under Captain Jesse Thomas from November 21, 1814 until March 8, 1815. From James' pension file we know that he married Catherine Owen in Morgan Co, GA in 1819. Catherine “Caty” Owen was the daughter of Augustine and Catherine (Shearly/Shirley) Owen. She was born in King & Queen Co, VA in 1805/6 just before her family's move to Morgan Co, GA. After 100 years of eking out a living as tobacco planters in first Middlesex, then Essex, and finally King & Queen Counties of Virginia, the Owen family flourished in the Georgia soil. (see Jonathan Owen by Jack W McConnell) Jimmy and Caty Green set up housekeeping in Morgan Co, GA and their first 3 children were born there. Just 10 years after Henry Co had been created and shortly after the 1830 census, they moved their young family to Henry Co as many of their family and friends would do. Like many of that day, James Green was a slave owner. The 1850 census reflects that James owned 11 slaves. The 1860 census shows a total of 14 slaves. Sadly, none of their names are recorded. The Greens were the parents of 8 children. James died sometime after 1872 and Katy died sometime after 1874. Both of them died in McDonough, Henry Co, GA and are buried at an unknown location. "The Elliott family group who came from Wiles, Oglethorpe and Morgan Counties into Henry County were accompanied by the Clouds, Greens, Hintons, Kelleys, Morrows, Owens and Thompsons." Georgia Henry County Personally came before me William Green who being duly sworn saith deposeth and saith that he was well acquainted with Robert Green and that he served a tour in the service of the United States in the war of eighteen hundred and twelve under Captain Barton. Deponent thinks? of Morgan County and states aforesaid deponent further saith Robert Green entered the service in the year eighteen hundred and thirteen and was discharged in the year eighteen hundred & fourteen. Robert Green was a brother of mine and I recollect well when my brother James Green went after him with a horse to bring him home.
