  Jefferson Buren Lawson, 78, of New Windsor, died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005 , at Rosewood Care Center in Moline.
  Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Cen ter, Coal Valley. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the fune ral home. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline.
  Jeff was born Feb. 26, 1927, near Bentree, W.Va. He was the seventh of 1 4 children born to James A.G. Lawson and Frances I. McClellan. The fam ily moved to the Quad-Cities area in 1930, eventually settling in rura l Mercer County. He was united in marriage to Joette Elizabeth Cauley o n Sept. 19, 1953, in Moline. She preceded him in death on March 11, 19 91.
  He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving at the end of World War II in t he Pacific Theater. He was a proud lifetime member of the International U nion of Operating Engineers, retiring in November 1992. He took great p ride in his trade as a heavy equipment operator, an occupation now car ried on by both his sons. He was a lifetime member of the American Leg ion and the VFW in Aledo. He also farmed for many years and enjoyed ra ising coonhounds.
  He is survived by children and spouses, siblings (names of living ommi tted here), . In addition to his wife and parents, he was proceeded in d eath by an infant son at birth; siblings, Everett, Walter and Harold L awson**, Gladys Hampton, Irene Hampton; and brothers, Darrell and Arthu r who died in infancy.
  Jeff's heart and his home were always an open door. "Old Man Lawson," a s he was affectionately known to all, will forever be missed by his fa mily and the countless others who had turned to him for guidance and s upport over the years.

 Jeff served on the USS Takinas Bay, which he referred to as a "baby ai rcraft carrier" and the USS Freestone.
