Harry relocated to Canada as a young man in 1908. He was the first of his immediate family to move to North American. he was invited by his aunt Elizabeth Person who was the first of the family to make the move.
He subsequent sent for his brother Frank who moved to Canada.
They later sent for their sisters Dora and Amy. Amy's boyfriend, Bill Wall, moved with them. Dora later moved back to England.
He met and courted his wife Minnie on an Indian motorcycle. He was working at the power house at Jordan River, Canada near Vancouver, BC. Minnie had gone to Jordan River to visit her sister Inez who was married to one of the other powerhouse operators.
They removed to Juneau, Terr. of Alaska seeking a climate which would give Minnie relief from her Asthma.
As a young man he was a avid sportsman; particularly enjoying basketball. Minnie died as a result of a head injury sustained about a steam ship returning to Juneau from a vacation in the lower 48. Both were buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Elk's Plot, Juneau, AK.
Harry purchased a beach front "recreation site" from the federal government in the late 1940's or early 1950's for a filing fee of $5.00. The land located on Lena Cove near Juneau was worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in the 1990's.
He had always been a avid outdoorsman, but following Minnies death he spent much of his time in the woods hunting or fishing. He often wandered the woods alone or hunted with Bill Fleek of Douglas.
I remember my grandfather as having a quiet English accent. He often wore a sports jacket, vest, slacks and a hat. He joined us for lunch almost daily when I was growing up.
He owned a home on 12th Street in Juneau. His yard was typical of many English homes with extensive, well tended gardens and lawn. He had a large Lilac bush in front as well as a large row of current bushes. Tour buses continued to bring tourists by the yard into the early 1990's.
As a young boy, I have fond memories of the family gathering to pick the berries and of the excellent jelly which followed.
He returned to England a couple of times in the 1950's. During one trip, he tried to trace his ancestry but family tradition reports that many of the pertinent records had been destroyed during World War II.
He married Hilda Sue Kerry at Juneau, Alaska in 1959 (approximately). He met her while vacationing in England. Sue migrated to Juneau with her daughters Ann and Jane Kerry. She had been previously married.
He died on the job at Alaska Electric Light and Power shortly after returning from a vacation in England with Sue. He was a power house operator for many years; at Thane, Salmon Creek, and at the power plant by the "Indian Village" in Juneau. This latter location is where he was working when he passed away.
Juneau. This latter location is where he was working when he passed away.
His obituary appeared in the Juneau Empire, 14 Jun 1965.
He had also worked for Reliable Transfer and the Alaska Juneau Gold Mine in Juneau, AK for many years.
He was a member of the Pioneers of Alaska and the Elks Lodge.
He was buried in the Elks Plot at Evergreen Cemetery following services at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.
As a side note, he had purchased pews and a lectern in memory of his parents and wife; they were destroyed in a fire in 2007.
