Note: he 5th grade. She attended Ketchikan Public School (more recently known as Main School) for 6th - 9th grades. She then attended two years at theWrangell Institute. It was a vocational boarding school for native children. Later she attended Haskell Institute in Kansas for two years which was also segregated. She took numerous business courses. She started as an Assistant File Clerk, and was promoted to Relief Stenographer and Head File Clerk. As a young woman she helped her mother, Clara Ridley, in the cannery in order to generate more pay. She piled cans to cool after the canning process, her mother was paid based on the numbe of trays filled. This was at age 9. She had to work continuously from that age, baby sitting for her Aunt Sadie (who worked in the cannery), berry picking, and at age 14 she herself started working in the canning loft. In this job she operated the "Flanger", which opened flat cans. The advent of Social Security nearly put her out of work; she had to lie about her age (stating that she was 18) in order to keep the job due to the dangers associated with moving equipment. While in Juneau, she met and married Raymond Barber, two children Patrica and Kathleen resulted, before they divorced. Both girls were adopted by her second husband, Donald D. Bowey. Evelyn was quite the business woman, owning and operating her own taxi company. After marrying her second husband, Donald D. Bowey, she worked for the Ketchikan Police Department as a dispatcher for ten years. She had to retire in 1968 because of the crippling effects of Rheumatoid Arthritis. This disease caused considerable pain for her until the advent of newer medicines in 1974. Her daughter Kathleen stated that she endeavored to enjoy life as best she could in her remaining years. She was kind and generous both to her family and to her acquaintances. When in better helath she looked after the welfare of some old pioneers, George Davis in particular, seeing that they had food or money when needed. She was fastidious in her dress, always well groomed. Even in her illness while she went no where else, she went for her hair appointments with great satisfaction. She was loved and admired by many, repected as a layd and bore her affliction with all the dignity she could. She was buried at the Mountain View Funeral Home in Tacoma, WA. Her social security number was 537-05-0570. Her obituary appeared in the Ketchikan Daily News, 1 Oct 1980. A marriage license application was reviewed, First Judicial District, Ketchikan, AK dated 15 Jan 1954. She was working in Ketchikan as a cab dispatcher. She and her first husband married in Dec 1944 according to this source and divorced at Ketchikan on 27 Jul 1953. She was Eagle. As a son-in-law, I have to add that she was a true lady and a great mother-in-law. The only women I discovered over the years who were her equal was my mother (he says loyally) and her daughter Kathy. She was single and living in Juneau, AK at 510 Kennedy Street in 1944 according to the BIA village census. She was enumerated as 1/2 Alaska native. Divorce records were reviewed, Alaska Vital Statistics, 1953. Ray L. Barber and Evelyn M. Barber were married 20 Dec 1944 in Douglas, AK. The divorced on 27 Jul 1953 in Ketchikan, AK.
