Obituary, Stella Alice Buxton Atkinson Soboleff Stella Alice Buxton Atkinson Soboleff passed away April 15, 2009 at the Sitka Pioneers Home. She was born May 19, 1922 in Metlakatla, Alaska. She was the daughter of John and Agnes Buxton. According to the family, she was âone of five great ladies in the John and Agnes Buxton family: Amanda, Sarah, Miranda, Priscilla and Stella.â During her life she lived at her home in Metlakatla, as well as Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau and Tenakee. She worked at the Annette Island Packing Co. warehouse and the Metlakatla Elementary School serving milk and cheese to all students K-8. As a pioneer Native business owner, she opened her own hamburger shop at the Annette Island airport. There she made great hamburgers and potato salad, and served many famous and notable people who passed through the airport [which was the gateway to Alaska at the time] in the 1960s. She also worked at Ketchikan General Hospital, and worked in the kitchen at the SEARHC Hospital in Sitka. After she retired, she returned to Metlakatla and continued to work with students of Metlakatla Headstart and the students of Annette Island School District. She married Walter Soboleff in June 1999 and moved to Juneau. She also lived with Walter a few years in Tenakee. Later she moved to the Sitka Pioneers Home for health reasons. She was a member of the Parent Teachers Assn. (PTA), and worked with Congregational Church Ladies Aid and Sunday school. She was also a member of Northern Light United Church in Juneau, Juneau Lions Club, Order of Eastern Star, Womenâs Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Alaska Native Sisterhood. âWherever she was, there was bound to be laughter,â family members said during her memorial services. âShe was a good teacher. She loved cook and bake, and she was famous for her hot chili. She had a great sense of humor, and she taught us always to be willing to help when help was needed.â Stella Alice Buxton Atkinson Soboleff is survived by her husband Dr. Walter Soboleff, Sr.; daughter Priscilla Peele and husband Edward Peele, Sr.; son Thomas L. Atkinson, Jr.; grandchildren Amanda Peele, Edward Peele, Jr.; daughter Janet Soboleff Burke; sons Sasha I. Soboleff, Walter A. Soboleff, Jr., Ross V. Soboleff; brothers Conrad Ryan, Sr., Bertram Ryan, Theodore Ryan; sister Hester Ryan; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. Memorial Services were held in Sitka April 17, 2009; at Metlakatla Presbyterian Church on April 19, 2009; and funeral services were held at Metlakatla Presbyterian Church on April 20, 2009.
