The following was published on Tuesday, 23 September 2014 in the Sitka Sentinel. Her obituary also appeared in the Fairbanks News Miner, 6 Sep 2014. The latter included her photograph. Former longtime Sitka resident Ada Lennette Wilkin passed away on Sept. 1, 2014, in Pacific, Wash.. Ada was born Aug. 15, 1936, in Minto, Alaska, to James W. Bruce and Elise Nova Huntington Bruce James. She was adopted by Dr. Walter Sobeloff and given the Tlingit name ShaXeeâdee. She was raised in Nenana until August 1945, when she and her seven siblings moved to Anchorage where they attended Eklutna School. In 1946 the family moved to Japonski Island where Ada attended Mt. Edgecumbe High School. Her mother worked for the Public Health Serviceâs Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital until she retired. Ada met Richard T. Wilkin in Sitka, and they were married in June 1956. Ada was a Certified Nurses Aide at Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital, and a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, especially baking home-made bread to go with her chili; big family gatherings; spending time with her grandchildren; and knitting and crocheting. Survivors include sisters Virginia Palmer of Everett, Wash.; Shirley Yocum, Carol Goddard and Marty (Pat)Barker, all of Sitka; and brother David (Renee) James of Wasilla. Her 10 children are: stepson Rick Wilkin, wife Linda and their children Corey, Stephen Nicole and Jamie all of Salmon, Wash.; Bernadette Bruce and daughters Charidy (Micah) and Vicki, all of Auburn, Wash.; Vicki Webb, husband Tom, and sons Tommy (Ashley) and Richard (Sabrina), all of Sparks Nev.; Lori Stedman (Mike) and sons Jakob (Rachel) and Matt, all of Juneau; Richard T. Wilkin III and Arnold Wilkin, of Pacific, Wash., and son Tyler; Ruby Delach and her children Christopher, Samantha and Anna, all of Poulsbo, Wash.; Tammy Mears (Tim) and sons James and Michael of Sitka; and Robert Wilkin and his son Robert Jr. and daughter Brenda all of Hoonah. Also surviving are 23 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Ada was preceded in death by her mother Elise Huntington James; father James Bruce; brothers James and Herbert Bruce; and sisters Marion (Mimi) Donthnier and Alrene (Beannie) Wolf. She will be greatly missed by her family and loved ones. Family members are very thankful for all the condolences and payers that have been received from many family friends. To honor Adaâs wishes there will be no services; however, the family will have a memorial to celebrate her life both in Pacific, Wash., and Sitka.
