Note: 12. Emma Louella Gordon (-Hurry) (James Gordon Family History) b. 7/23/1851 in Akron Village, Newstead, Erie Co., NY, to parents, Lorenzo Dow Gordon (2) and Electa Wright (4/10/1812- 9/18/1853, daughter of Earl Wright, Jr. and Jedida Cook) d. 6/21/1931 in Akron, Erie Co., NY bu. Evergreen Lawn Cemetery, Akron, Erie Co., NY Emma married James "Jim" Hurry (10/7/1851-9/17/1919, son of Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Hurry) on 11/21/1876, in Methodist Church in Chili, Monroe Co., NY. Emma was born in NY and migrated with her family to MI and then to WI. At a young age, her mother, Electa, died but she was one of the few children that Lorenzo kept to raise himself. When Lorenzo and her brothers went to fight in the Civil War, Emma would have been only ten years old and she then was raised by another family, possibly staying with her sister, Electa Elizabeth Gordon (6). By 1870 she was a domestic servant working in Dodge Co., WI near to her family. She and her sister, Laura A. Gordon (11), moved back to NY where they each married and reared their families. Letter written by Emma Gordon-Hurry to Bennett Gordon's widow, Eliza Ann Gwynn-Gordon (*Ellen in the below letter is Eliza's daughter, Ellen Lucretia Gordon-Dale, and her two eldest children are William and Fannie. Lib in the letter is Electa Elizabeth "Lib" Gordon-Barber and Alice Jane Barber-Kimball is one of her daughters.) Akron Feb., 21, 1898 Dear Aunt, I received your letters and was glad to hear from you and hear you was all well. My health has been very fair this winter. The rest are usually well. Mr. Hurry is not as work now. It is very dull here at present. He works in the Akron Cement Works in the Summer. We have 4 children. Mary is 20 years old, Maud is 18, Edna is 11 and Glen is 9 years old. Mary is living with a widow lady about one mile from here. Maud boards at home. She works in the Printing Office. Edna and Glen go to school. Where is Ellen's children Willie and Fannie? Has she got any more? Have you got a picture of Uncle Bennett you could send me? I would be so glad to get your picture and the children's. If you will send them, I will send ours as soon as we get them taken. Lib and Alice was out here last Summer during the Encampment. There is not any one around here that knew any thing about Uncle Bennett's getting married. They all say they do not think he was. I have inquired of the oldest people here and in Ogden where he used to live and they say they do not remember any ever hearing about it. It is a stormy disagreeable day. Is Waupun a large place? I remember when I was a girl of going there with the Sunday School to visit the Prison. I would like to go West and visit all those places again. I never enjoyed going any where any better than I did to your house. It seemed like going home. Well, it is supper time so I will have to bring my letter to a close. Hoping this may find you all well. Please write soon. Love to all. Affectionately yours, Emma L. Hurry, Akron, NY Emma's Obituary reads as following: Emma Gordon-Hurry - Emma Gordon Hurry was born on Hart Street, Akron, N.Y., July 23, 1851. When she was two years of age, the family moved to Grand Rapids, Mich. In her girlhood she returned to Ogden, N.Y., where she was married November 21, 1876, to James Hurry of Chili, N.Y., and later moved to Akron where she spent the balance of her life. Early in life she joined the Methodist Episcopal Church and was a faithful member to the end. She passed away Sunday, June 21, 1931, at her late home. A strange coincidence was that she was born on Hart street in Akron, returning to end her days on the same street where she saw the light of day. The funeral services were held at the home on Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock and were conducted by the Rev. G.C. Bucher of the First M.E. Church. She is survived by four children: Mary E. Rung and Edna M. of Akron, Maude M. Kinne of Wyoming, N.Y., Glenn H. Hurry of Hornell, N.Y., and three grandsons, Gordon and Ivan Kinne and Glenn C.
