[R139 in 1st edition, R135 in 2nd ed.]: further on his descendants. Son Elisha and wife Fanny Clarissa Pratt had eight children: Amy Fidelia Rockwell, b. 24 Sept. 1837 at Canton; married there, 20 April 1856, Samuel F. Coons, a farmer, born 25 July 1834 at Syracuse, N.Y. They lived at Canton and had 3 children before she died on 15 March 1876. Samuel was still living there in 1894. [Boughton, p. 394] Mary Emily Rockwell, b. 21 April 1839 at Canton; married there, 10 Sept. 1864, Jacob Horning, a farmer. He served in the Civil War. They lived at Canton and Columbia, Pa., and had no children as of 1876. John E. Rockwell, b. 5 Dec. 1840 at Canton. He served in the Civil War, enlisting in August 1861 in Co. D, 106th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness and discharged. He married in August of 1864 at Canton, Amanda Coons, who was born at Syracuse (surely a sister of Samuel, who married John's sister Amy). In 1875 they moved to California, living at Point of Timber [a small lumber community on the isolated North Coast of Mendocino County], in 1876 when Patterson corresponded with them. Two children at the time: Grace Rockwell, b. 30 January 1866 at Canton. Clara V. Rockwell, b. 23 Dec. 1867 at Canton. Simon P. Rockwell, b. 7 Jan. 1844 at Canton; died there 26 Jan. 1845. Melville H. Rockwell, b. 13 June 1846 at Canton. He served in the Civil War, enlisting in Co. H, 15th Regiment of New York State Volunteers. He married 22 Dec. 1870, at Clayton, N.J., Margaret L. McMahan, who was b. 1 Sept. 1848 at Danville, Pa. They were living at Canton in 1894. Two children: Henry P. Rockwell, b. 17 Oct. 1871 at Canton. Robert R. Rockwell, b. 16 June 1874 at Canton. Ebenezer P. Rockwell, b. 13 Aug. 1849 at Canton; m. 30 April 1870, at Liberty, Pa., Mary Jane Bellman. They lived at Burlington, Pa., in 1876, having had one child: Reuben H. Rockwell, b. 13 May 1874 at Armenia, Pa. Silas Terry Rockwell, b. 26 June 1853 at Canton; d. there 2 June 1868. Elisha Rockwell, b. 26 July 1856. He married 17 Sept. 1874, at Union, Pa., Minerva L. Kennedy. They were at Union in 1876, with their first child: Freeman Elias Rockwell. Phoenix [v. 3, p. 2434] puts Freeman's birth date as 16 January 1866, and Boughton copied this, but given that this was 8 years before their marriage, and Elisha was only 10 years old, surely this was a typographic error. I would suggest it was 1876. Perhaps this child was the "F. E. Rockwell," a boarder in Brooklyn, N.Y., in the 1900 census: a tinsmith born in Pennsylvania in June of 1876. Son William Harrison Rockwell (1814-1859): A typo in the book has him dying in 1850; should have read 1859. He and wife Sarah Caspar, of Covington, Pa., had three children: Walter Rockwell, b. 6 June 1837 at Armenia, Pa.; d. 9 June 1845 at Canton. Elizabeth Rockwell, b. on the Ohio River 10 miles below Steubenville; died in March of 1842. Mary Rockwell, b. 12 Dec. 1843 near Wellsburgh, Va. She married 24 Feb. 1874, at Canton, Arthur Goddspeed, a farmer. They lived at Covington, Pa., in 1876 with their first child, Julia E. Goodspeed, b. 23 Feb. 1875 at Covington. Son Jacob Grantier Rockwell and wife Martha Caspar of Canton, Pa., had one child; Jacob and second wife, Matilda Jane Mason, had seven children. The eight children were: Martha S. Rockwell, b. 17 March 1839 at Canton. She married there, 3 Nov. 1861, Aaron P. Coons, who was b. 23 April 1839 at Mount Vernon, Ohio. He soon enlisted in the 50th Regiment of New York State Volunteers (Engineers), serving till the close of the Civil War. They resided at Canton in 1894. Four children. Richard M. Rockwell, b. 8 July 1843 at Canton. He served in the Civil War, enlisting 21 Sept. 1861 in Co. K, 8th Regiment of Pennsylvania Cavalry. He was captured 12 Oct. 1863, and was imprisoned for 11 months at Andersonville and for 6 months at Libby prison. After release, he was discharged on 21 June 1865. He married 12 Sept. 1866, at LeRoy, Pa., Sarah Ann Mason, who was born 15 March 1843 at Armenia, Pa. They lived at Canton in 1876. Four children as of 1875: Arthur J. Rockwell, b. 5 Sept. 1867 at Union, Pa. Margaret M. Rockwell, b. 14 Feb. 1870 at Armenia, Pa. Augusta Rockwell, b. 19 June 1872 at Armenia, Pa. Matilda J. Rockwell, b. 31 Aug. 1875 at Fall Brook Ward, Pa. George W. Rockwell, b. 17 March 1846 at Canton; a farmer. He married 18 Oct. 1870, at Armenia, Pa., Emma E. Green, who was b. 9 Aug. 1852 at Bedford, Westchester Co., N.Y. They lived for several years at Canton, then moved to Elmira, Chemung Co., N.Y., living there in 1894. Two children as of 1874: Cora E. Rockwell, b. 5 June 1873; d. 21 June 1873. Cora E. Rockwell, b. 3 July 1874 at Canton. Nancy Jane Rockwell, b. 28 March 1849 at Canton. She married there, 26 Nov. 1873, Augustus P. Hackett. They lived at Canton in 1876, no children as of yet. Samuel C. Rockwell, b. 13 June 1852 at Canton. He graduated at Bethany College in West Virgina on 22 June 1874, and lived at Canton in 1874, unmarried; at Troy, Pa., in 1894. Rosetta D. Rockwell, b. 8 July 1855 at Canton; living there unmarried in 1876. Robert E. Rockwell, b. 10 April 1858 at Canton. Albert Ellsworth Rockwell, b. 25 Sept. 1862 at Canton. Son Adoniram Rockwell (b. 1821): A minor error in the index; he didn't die in 1850, but was living in Union, Pa., in 1876. He and wife Eliza Pratt had four children, all born at Canton: Clinton O. Rockwell, b. 6 June 1844; a farmer and teacher. He married, 22 July 1873 at Canton, Mary Jane Channell, who was born at Canton on 11 Sept. 1851. They settled at Roaring Branch, Pa., by 1876, and were still there in 1894. Two children: Frank E. Rockwell, b. 5 Dec. 1875 at Armenia, Pa. Leon A. Rockwell. b/ 26 Feb. 1877 at Mill Creek, Pa. Theodore P. Rockwell, b. 17 June 1852; became a telegraph operator. He married, 25 Dec. 1874 at Troy, Pa., Clarissa L. Wheeler, and settled at Roaring Branch, Pa., by 1876; back in Troy by 1894. No mention of children in Boughton, p. 395. Celia Mary Rockwell, b. 4 May 1854; married there, 25 Feb. 1872, William Geiger, a miller born in Germany; settled at Union, Pa., by 1876. Three children. Willis E. Rockwell, b. 4 Dec. 1856. Living with his parents in 1876. ______________________________________________________________________________________
