The growth of this village to a leading position in the township has been mentioned. In 1852-3 the second church of the township was erected at Millerton by the Methodist Episcopal denomination. The pastor in charge at that time was Rev. William H. Knapp, and Hector L. Miller, Wright Dunham and Charles Wilson were among the principal contributors to the means of its erection. This edifice is still standing and in good repair. Rev. Messrs. Knapp, Wooden, Coolbaugh, Ford and John Alabaster were the first regular pastors after the church was built. Later came Revs. A.I. Blanchard, A. Ensign, N.B. Congdon, H.B. Troxel, and Paul Smith, the present incumbent. Services are held regularly every Sabbath, and a flourishing Sunday-school is kept up the year round. The first and only newspaper published in the township is the Millerton Advocate. This paper was established April 26th 1877, by A.C. Lumbard and son. It was purchased by Harry T. Graves, the present editor and publisher, in October of the same year. It has a circulation of about 800, and a large advertising patronage, mostly from the city of Elmira. There are four practicing physicians in the township, viz.: Drs. Nathaniel Smith, Frank Smith and T.B. Buck of Millerton, and Dr. Charles Voorhess, of Daggett's Mills. There is but one lawyer, S.E. Kirkendall, at Millerton. Millerton Lodge, No. 935, I.O.O.F. was organized July 19th 1876, with twenty charter members, viz. William B. Sturdevant, Edgar Kinner, A.A. Kinner, N.F. Kinner, S.E. This lodge meets on Saturday evenings and has a good working membership. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ http://www.waynehistorypa.org/page/palmyra Palmyra Township Prior to 1792 Reuben, Alpheus, and Alexander Jones, along with their sister Widow Cook settled below the mouth of Middle Creek. Mr. Ames has been a very successful farmer; but now proposes to leave the work to younger hands and spend the afternoon and evening of life in peace and quiet. And no finer place than our peaceable, quiet town can be found for that purpose. ________________________________________________________________________ Wellsboro Agitator April 25, 1900 Local Facts and Comments --- Mr. Elisha Ames, an elderly resident of Millerton, is suffering from a recent road accident in which he was run over by his own horse harnessed to a lumber wagon. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Mary Ann Swetland Ames may be the same person as Sallie Ann Ames since some records show that each of the names has same children. Mary claimed as widow in Michigan. Sallie's maiden name is Andrews. Still confusing but Swetland might have married to different Elisha Ames. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Hi, I came across information where you were researching the Ames family. Orrin Ames and Leonard Ames, whom I believe were brothers, removed from Herkimer County, New York to Jackson township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. They lived on what is now known as Trowbridge Station Road. Charles Bednar purchased over 100 acres there about 47 years ago and was told that there was a cemetery on the property of approximately 12 graves and was shown the site but there were no markers. A few years later he found a memorial stone on the top of a stone wall and it was Orrin Ames who died in 1847. He does not recall any other information. The memorial marker has since disappeared. This may be accurate since Orrin was evidently deceased by the 1850 census enumeration. For whatever reasons the family seems to have abandoned the cemetery as Orrin's wife Hannah is buried nearby in Alder Run Cemetery as is their son Elisha. I have no idea where Jonathan is buried but he could also have been buried with Elisha. Jonathan's wife is buried in the town of Southport, Chemung County, New York. Charles Bednar, the property owner lives in downstate Pennsylvania. We spoke yesterday and if he is up next summer he said he would show me the burial site. I have an idea of the location but not the exact location. J.
