Ruth Ames, nee Allen's file Griffeth Family based from Evalena Merrill Sticker's letter to Ruth. Edited by Donald Ames - March 23, 1990 218 Princeton Ave., Corning, N.Y. 21 Sept 1965 Dear Ruth, I hope you have not forgotten a "little girl cousin" that used to visit you when you lived at College & Clinton, Elmira. The "little girl" has never forgotten the nice times she had playing at your house. I have been searching for your address for a year - end last Fri. I had luncheon at the Mark Twain and visited the new Historical Center in the afternoon - and as I have been doing a family genealogy for the past 3 years - happened to ask Mrs. Meyers if she by any chance knew you. She did and gave me your address. You see I did not know your husband's first name and had not contacted the right family yet. Have been attending Genealogy classes at the steele Memorial Library and have written up our families. I have been corresponding with a Lt. Col Griffeth in Seattle, Wash. - he was a Michigan Griffeth. He has also traced the family to 1610 - a Joshua Griffeth came to America and his son William was born in Boston in 1638. That family makes us all eligible for the Mayflower Society in Boston. Then there was a great great grandmother Mary Gardiner - wife of Stephen Griffeth - whose family came from London in 1634 with the Puritans and whose ancestor brought the island, from the Indians, that now bears his name - at the tip of Long Island - Gardiner Island & Bay. Its alot of fun finding out about our people. I would like to finish the family by adding the names of your children & grandchildren which I suppose you have by now. I have one granddaughter Caren Bernice Stickler - daughter of my youngest son. He married a Buffalo girl & worked with the Children's Aid there for 3 years. after graduating from Columbia School for Social Work N.Y.C. He is now Director of New Hamphire Blind Assoc. in Concord, Conn. My other son is a History Prof. and lives with me. My husband died 2 yrs ago. Sarah DeWitt Glover lives here not far from me and we often talk. I will send you some family record sheets if you would fill them in for me - and if you or yours would like to follow the family I will send you copies of our lines. Please give me dates of Births - deaths & marriages - names and places. Did you have any family records from the Griffeths? I have Horace Griffeths Bible which contain 4 sheets of the old records. Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon. Evalena Merrill Stickler Evalena M. Sticler's writing followed 14 Nov 1965 letter to Ruth. Do you know the story of our Gardiner Family? Stephen Griffeth married Mary Gardiner daughter of Lyon Gardiner 6th - that was Horace Griffeths (our g.grandfather's mother and father. The Gardiners came to America (Lion Gardiner from London, Eng. and his Dutch wife Marichjen Willemson (Holland) in 1634. The first child David Gardiner - born Apr 29, 1636 at Saybrook Fort, at the mouth of the Conn. River - which his father, Lion, built and commanded, was the first white child born of English parents on the New Eng. coast. We are descended from him. Later they bought the island, at the tip of Long Island - still called Gardiner's Island, from the Indians. The Island is still in possession of the family. Lion also wrote a book on the Pequit Wars of N. Eng. (We have it copied). They came with the Puritans. Lion Gardiner was a military engineer for William of Orange in Holland before coming to America in 1634. This is a real family Thanksgiving Story. Hi Cindi, What year of Julia Hoagland marrying a Nelson T. Hinckley in Livingston, Co.? I will put it as a note that you found. We can figure the difference of year the will made and some record time. I find Julia H. Swarthout in her father's will. It is possible that she is Julia Hinckley Swarthout? She could have married twice. Stephen Griffeth's mother is still unknown. Thank you about father Stephen being born in MA in 1745. What source? Is this the same man? Welcome and Thanks Don Ames From: Cindi Ingersoll [mailto:crsingersoll@hotmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, April 03, 2007 1:32 PM To: dames@cox.net Subject: Hello, I am still working on the information from the will. I found in Livingston Co., marriages a Julia Hoagland marrying a Nelson T. Hinckley. I think this might just be Christopher and Clarinda's daughter. The will however has Julia H. Swarthout...kind of a mystery to me. I can't find any Julia Swarthout's going forward like on a census or anything. Also, I wondered if you had any information on Stephen Griffeth's mother?.. the information I have is his father is Stephen Griffeth being born in Massachussets in 1745.
