Notes
a. Note:   Nichols Information: The family name was formerly spelled by some ancestors as Niccolls, but has long since been changed to the present Nichols. In 1841 the oldest Nichols son, Joseph age 23, made a trip to Louisa County to look up a location and being pleased with the country sent back a favorable reply, so the following year the father, accompanied by his family started to Iowa. Reaching his destination in 1842 he purchased 80 acres of land where the family continued to reside. It continued to be father Nichols home until his death in 1868, and Mother Nichols died on the old homestead in 1879. Both were members of the presbyterian Church. They early trained their children in the teachings of the Bible, and ith the exception of Wiliam, who united instead with the Methodist Episcopal Church, all were members of the parents' church.
William and Martha spent their married life farming in the vicinity. This couple and two small children are buried in Rice Cemetery, rural Morning Sun.
