Note: 1. James Gordon b. abt. 1775-1780 d. probably between 1830-1840 probably in Ogden, Monroe Co. or possibly Genesee Co., NY bu. probably in Monroe Co., or Genesee Co., NY James married (Unknown) Mrs. Gordon (b. abt. 1780-1790 - d. probably between 1830-1840) before 1810 PROFILE FOR JAMES GORDON James Gordon is the oldest known ancestor of the Gordon family line. Further research may reveal additional information about James or his ancestors. WHAT IS KNOWN & BELIEVED: A) CHILDRENS' BIRTHPLACE FACT: Lorenzo Dow Gordon (2) and brother Bennett Nathanial Gordon (3) (sons of James Gordon) both state on their civil war military muster sheets as having been born in OVID, Seneca Co., NY, 4/26/1810 and 10/13/1816 respectively, thus have searched this area for records of James Gordon having lived. B) DEATH CERTIFICATE FACT: Bennett Nathanial Gordon's Death Certificate states that his father is James Gordon. There has not been a death record located as of yet for Lorenzo Dow Gordon. C) 1810 CENSUS: I cannot locate a James Gordon anywhere in the area on the 1810 Census. D) 1820 CENSUS: I have located a James Gordon on the 1820 Census in COVERT, Seneca Co., NY (Covert was set aside from the Town of Ovid in 1817 and is located just 12 miles south of Ovid). The area was all under the name of OVID in 1810. HEAD of household is Gordon, James: (age between 26-45) and household also includes: 1 male, age under 10, 1 male, age 10 to 16, 1 male between 16 to 25, and 1 female, age between 26 to 45. Persons engaged in agriculture are 3. Meaning James is a farmer, as are the majority of men in this county. Hypothesis is that this would be: James Gordon (age 26-45), Bennett (age 4), Lorenzo (age 10), one other male (age 16-25, relationship unknown, either relative or hired farm hand), and James's wife (age 26 to 45). E) 1830 CENSUS: I have located a James Gordon on the 1830 Census in Ogden, Monroe Co, NY (Ogden is 85 miles NW of Covert). James - HEAD of household is Gordon, James: (age between 50-60) and household also includes: 1 male 10 to 15 (Bennett, age 14), 1 female between 5-10 (Sally Ann), 1 female age 40-50 (James's wife). Lorenzo Dow Gordon is not listed on this census, thus assumed he has just left home at age 20, and hypothesized to be working on a neighboring farm. As is typical in this time, spouses generally met each other through neighboring households. Lorenzo's future wife is Electa Wright, whose father is Earl Wright. Earl Wright's household including Electa are listed on the 1830 census in Ogden, Monroe Co, NY only about 20 households away from the James Gordon household. F) 1840 CENSUS: I cannot locate a James Gordon anywhere in the area on the 1840 Census and believe him to have passed away by this time. Lorenzo Gordon and Bennett Gordon are each living in Pembroke, Genesee Co, NY as head of their respective households. (Pembroke is 43 miles west of Ogden) ʺ Listed on 1840 Pembroke, Genesee Co, NY Census: Gordon, Lorenzo - head of household, age between 30-40 (Lorenzo, age 30); 2 females age under 5 (Catharine, age 3 & Elizabeth, age 1); 1 female between 15-20 (Unknown); 1 female between 20-30 (Electa, age 28). ʺ Listed on 1840 Pembroke, Genesee Co, NY Census: Gordon, Bennett - head of household, age between 20-30; 1 female age 15-20 - THIS IS PROBABLY HIS SISTER (nearby to Lorenzo Gordon Household) Hypothesis is that the female, age 15-20 in Bennett's house is his sister. The age matches up to the female, age 5-10, on previous 1830 census. The assumption is that both James Gordon and his wife died between 1830-1840 in either Monroe County or Genesee County, NY. A young girl at this time would remain in her parent's home until coming of age. The fact that she is in Bennett's home suggests that both parents are dead. Complete Guess. G) JAMES GORDON'S BIRTH: If his age is correctly listed in the 1820 & 1830 census, this would mean that he was born between 1775-1780. This would also mean his wife was born between 1780-1790. H) JAMES GORDON'S DEATH: If hypothesis is correct, both James Gordon and his wife died between 1830-1840. I would assume that they died and are buried in either Monroe County or Genesee County, NY. I) Religious Affiliation: Assume METHODIST. Lorenzo Dow Gordon was named after an eccentric traveling Methodist minister, named Lorenzo Dow (October 16, 1777-February 2, 1834). Based on this, I would assume that James Gordon himself is Methodist. In addition, Lorenzo and Lorenzo's children professed affiliation with the Methodist Church. J) Military Service?: Could James have served as a NY Soldier during the War of 1812? Very possible Also, it is possible that James Gordon's father served in the Revolutionary War. James's father would be the perfect age for a soldier during this time. Also, the town of Ovid and surrounding region was part of the Central New York Military Tract used to pay soldiers of the American Revolution. Children of James Gordon: With (Unknown Mrs. Gordon) 2. i. Lorenzo Dow (Scott?) Gordon - 4/26/1810-1/31/1871 3. ii. Bennett Nathanial Gordon - 10/13/1816-11/25/1897 4. iii. Sally Ann Gordon - b. abt. 1825-1830-d. between 1840-11/1897
