russeanes1: Rane Chastain Hutchison: Rane was a spy for the Union Army of Grant, Sherman and McPherson. He applied in the 1880's for reimbursement for funds and I have in my possession considerable documentation of his service as a spy. He indicated in his application that he had given the plans of the Confederate defense of Vicksburg to General Grant.

SoapEmporium: Rane's first wife was Mary Owens. They were married in August 1839. She died in 1851 in Baton Rouge. (Mary Owens and Rane are my husband's great-great grandparents.) His second wife was Mary Rice and his notes indicate their marriage as August 1853. She died in 1858. His 3rd wife was Elizabeth Miller - they were married July 1859. His last wife, Emily Pickett Caldwell Herndon were married in 1865.
fNancy: SoapEmporium, any idea how he ended up in St Joseph, Missouri? The Helen Miller in the 1860 household is my GGrandmother. Family oral history has Elizabeth Miller's son, Charles, was bringing a race horse back from New Orleans and slept with the horse on the boat trip, got sick and never recovered. Once I found Rane I figured that was where Charles' interest in horses came from.
