Notes
a. Note:   Henry E. Little
Henry Edward Little, the man “who never knew what a vacation was until he stopped working six years ago”, died at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Robert H. Hartman, 632 Trail avenue, Friday evening at 8:15 o’clock, after an illness of several months, aged 87 years.
The deceased had a widely varied career. He was born at Conewago Chapel, near McSherrystown, Pa., March 11, 1851, and during his early life saw his father, Pius J. Little, twice called to the civil War fighting ranks, the second time being in 1865. Mr. Little, then 14, decided to take his father’s place and was ordered sworn in. Five days before the date for him to report for duty word came that Lee had surrendered.
In 1866 the family moved across state line into Carroll county, Md., where he started work at the age of 15 years in a bake shop, a job he held for a few months. He then went to Baltimore where for many years he was a hack driver.
At the age of 25 years, Mr. Little came to Frederick and married. For nine years he was team boss at McMurray’s canning factory, for 16 years he was connected with the Ox Bibre Brush Company. Then followed seven and a half years laying gas mains for the Isabella Gas Works, and another period for the Hagerstown and Frederick Railway Company.
Eleven and a half years as a patrolman of state roads was Mr. Little’s next assignment. As one job followed another, it always came without a lapse of time. There was no space between jobs - no vacation. He retired at the age of 81 years when he was seized with an attack of muscular rheumatism.
He is survived by a son, Francis P. Little, Frederick, two sisters, Mrs. Edward Eckenrode, Baltimore, and Mrs. John Caesar, Summit, N.J., two brothers, Pius and Florence, Westminster, three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic church, this city, a charter member of the Holy Name Society of the church, and its oldest member.
The body is at the funeral home 214 North Market street, and will be removed to the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Hartman Sunday morning at 9 o’clock. Funeral services will be held Monday morning with Mass at St. John’s church at 9 o’clock. Interment in St. John’s cemetery. M. R. Etchinson and Son, funeral directors.
