Joel Gersmann was an iconic American playwright, director and writer. He ran Broom Street Theater in Madison, Wisconsin, the longest running experimental theater in the U.S. During his 36-years as Broom Street Theater's artistic director, he wrote and directed 88 original plays, as well as 26 adaptations of famous theatrical works. In spite of the heavy criticism he received for his politically charged work, from many corners of the artistic community and the community at large, he continuously directed controversial plays about the pharmaceutical industry, shady politics, sex scandals in the church, the arts, and many other politically sensitive topics. His plays were deeply informed by Joel's broad and brilliant scholarship and immense cultural sophistication, which could often be hidden by a personality that ranged from lovably rumpled to irascible.
