Notes
a. Note:   Not proven to be the daughter of Thomas and Winifred Dillard, but circumstantial evidence supports that fact. She and Andrew "Bryant" were listed in the same county as their son, James Dillard, in the 1790 Fairfield Co., South Carolina Census. She and Bryant were listed on page 169, and James was listed on page 160. There was also an Edmond Dillard listed on the same page probably James' son. Thomas Sr. Dillard's father was Edward Dillard, b. 1672, New Kent Co., VA. There were several records for an Edward in Halifax Co. VA. New Kent Co., VA later became Hanover Co., VA from where Charles S. and Agnes Spradling first lived and where their children were born. Charles and his siblings were born in New Kent Co., VA. (Note: Daughter, Mary Jane "Jennie" (Spradley) Gomillion listed South Carolina as her mother's birth state and Virginia as her father's birth state in the 1880 Walton Co., FL Census. However, if Jane was the daughter of Thomas and Winifred, above, she must have been born in Virginia.)
Probably died around 4 Oct 1821 in Kershaw Co., SC according to the newspaper on this date. "In this town, Mrs. Spradley" was listed on page 3 in the death notices of the Camden Gazette, Camden, Kershaw Co., SC on 4 Oct 1821. (See below)
It may have been the elder Bryant's widow whose death was laconically announced in the same paper 4 Oct. 1821 as "In this town, Mrs. Spradley" (ibid., p. 17) One Willis Daniels (ca 1765 -1800), hanged at Orangeburg, S.C. 16 May 1800 for repeated thefts, confessed that "From Mr. Brain (sic) Spradley, of Camden, with whom I some time lived, I stole a quantity of clothing, and a pair of saddlebags, and made off in the night..." at some time during his life of crime (ca. 1785 -1800) Georgetwon [S.C.] Gazette of 16 July 1800, in S.C. Mag. of Anc. Research 6[1974].
Probably part of the family of Thomas Dillard Sr., b. 3 Aug 1706, King and Queen Co., VA, d. 23 Oct 1774, Pittsylvania Co., VA (Previously this part was Halifax Co., VA until 1767. He first moved to Halifax County in 1752.), wife, Winifred Nalle, b. 1705, d. 1744. They had at least two sons, James Dillard, b. 15 Oct 1727, Essex Co. VA, d. 1794, Fairfield Co., SC (where Andrew "Bryant" and Jane (Dillard) Spradley lived in the 1790 Fairfield Co., SC Census, p. 169, James Dillard, here, was listed on page 160.). He was a Captain in the Revolutionary War. The other known son, was Thomas Dillard Jr., 1730, Essex Co., VA, d. 23 Sep 1784, Washington Co., NC. Both were named in Thomas Sr. Dillard's will. A James Dillard married a Mary Ann Hunt on 8 Jul 1748 in Hanover Co., VA where the Spradlin(g)/Spradleys lived before they moved to Amelia Co., VA in around 1743. (No proof that it was this James Dillard.) James, son of Thomas, above, lived in the Halifax Co., VA area. He owned land there in 1752. He was fined in 1775 Pittsylvania Court. He failed to show up in 1778 in Pittsylvania Co., VA Court. He had probably moved to North Carolina. He had a deed recorded in 1786 Surry Co, NC. Thomas Jr. married Martha Webb, b. 1739, d. 1790.
 (See below)
Thomas Dillard Sr was probably born in King and Queen County, Virginia, circa 1700-1705. He married Winifred Nalle, daughter of Martin Nalle and Mary Alden Nalle in Essex County, Virginia before July 1729. Thomas and his family were in Orange County from 1740 until 1748, when the area became part of a new county, Culpepper. During their time in Orange County, Thomas served as lay reader and clerk at St. Mark's Parish. On 24 Nov 1749, Thomas received a land grant in Culpepper County of 1,100 acres adjoining George Dillard. He kept his land less than four months, and he and Winifred sold it on 15 Mar 1749/50. Shortly thereafter, in early 1752, Thomas Sr moved to the newly formed county of Halifax in southern Virginia. There Thomas Sr., Thomas Jr, Edward and James Dillard patented 4,800 acres of land and were active in the settlement and development of that area. In the next fifteen years, Thomas Sr received appointments to positions of Justice of the Peace and Coroner. He was also active in the church serving Antrim Parish as vestryman, warden and lay reader. In the Militia he received commissions as Captain in 1752 and Major in 1755. In 1767 Pittsylvania County was formed out of Halifax County, and the Dillards and their holdings were in this new county. Once again,Thomas Sr and Thomas Jr became active in the establishment of the new area. They were appointed as two of the first Justices of the Peace in 1767 and Thomas Sr was appointed Coroner in 1768. He was lay reader for the New Camden Parish. Thomas Dillard Sr. died in Pittsylvania County in June 1774. He named two sons in his will: Thomas Jr and James. Thomas Jr. was the administrator. (Charles I Spradling, James Spradling, Joseph Edgar Spradling, and Jonathan "John" Spradling all lived in the Halifax/Pittsylvania/Lunenburg Counties area during much of the period that the Dillards lived there. Joseph Edgar died in Halifax County in 1767 and Jonathan "John" died 1768 in Pittsylvania County, which was formed from Halifax County in 1767. Andrew Bryant and Charles II Spradley/Spradling had moved to North and South Carolina sometime around 1758. Charles was listed in a tax list in Rowan Co., NC in 1758.)
