Note: According to their son Joseph Edgar's Old Bible, Charles and Agnes had six children, James, Joseph E., John, Matilda, Charles, and Andrew B. Gracie Muncin, the owner of the Bible, a descendant of Joseph Edgar, stated that the children who didn't die in Virginia moved to North and South Carolina and that Charles II and Andrew B. "Bryant" moved to South Carolina and one family changed the name to Spradley. (Note: Actually, all of Andrew "Bryant" Spradley's descendants are Spradley and all of Charles II Spradley/Sprading's son Charles III's descendants are Spradley.) She stated that James wife was Mary and their children were Charles, Frances, Nancy and John. Joseph married Susanna Sneed and their children were Joseph, Judith, Obediah and Jesse. Charles married Martha and their children were Agnes, Ann, Charles and another son was listed in a Will or Deed. Gracie stated that Andrew B. "Bryant" was the youngest and had children, James, Andrew, Dilly (Dillard) and Briant (Bryant). His wife was unnamed in the Bible. He also had a daughter. Other records confirm that Andrew "Bryant's" wife, was Jane Dillard. Gracie said, although hard to believe, there were no birthdates in the Bible. She said women always write in the dates, don't they? (Note: Andrew "Bryant' Spradley's daughter was Mary Jane "Jennie" Spradley. Also, John Spradley, b. Bet. 1776 - 1794, SC, d. 29 Oct 1826, Camden, Kershaw Co., SC, wife, Nancy, was probably this son, too. He died 29 Oct 1826 in Camden, Kershaw Co., SC.) (Note: Other records supply the birth dates. Gracie supplied some of the death dates, below. Other records verify these dates. The unknown son of Charles may have been James Spradley, b. bet. 1756-1784, SC, wife, unknown, b. bet. 1756-1784 or Charles Spradling, b. Abt. 1755, Halifax Co., VA, wife, Minnie Moore. James was listed in the 1800 Kershaw Co., SC Census. Possible son, Charles, was listed in the 1785 Halifax Co., VA Census. Charles b. 1728 - 1735, VA, died 1783 in Camden Co., SC, so it could not have been him in 1785 Census. James "Jack" son, Charles, had moved to North Carolina. His son, James, was born 1779 in Wilkes Co., NC, so it could not have been him. ) Charles iI Spradley-Spradling and Andrew Bryant Spradley, sons of Charles and Agnes served in the Revolutionary War. John Spradling, James Jr. Spradling, sons of James "Jack" Spradling, Joseph Spradling, son of Joseph Edgar Spradling, and Oliver Spradling, son of Jonathan "John" Spradling, grandsons of Charles and Agnes, also served in the Revolutionary War. (See their individual notes for the details.) Charles II served under General Thomas Sumter, who was born in Hanover Co. VA, where all of Charles and Agnes Spradling's children were born. Charles, Sr. died before 1754 in Lunenburg Co., VA which is near Halifax Co., VA. (Halifax County was formed from a section of Lunenburg County 27 Feb 1752. See Estate Notes below, Charles died before Jan 1754.) James died in Wilkes Co., NC in 1808 (7 Feb 1808 and left a Will). Jonathan "John" died in Pittsylvania Co., VA 28 Sep 1768 and named siblings Charles, Andrew and Matilda in his Will. (Pittsylvania County was formed from part of Halifax County in 1767.) Joseph Edgar died Sep 1767 in Halifax Co., VA ( Left a Will). Charles died 1783 in Craven, SC (Left a Will). Andrew B. "Bryant" died after 1800 (8 Oct 1817) in South Carolina. (His Obituary was in the Camden, SC, Gazette.) Regarding Matilda there was nothing but her name in the Bible. After the children who didn't die in Virginia moved to North and South Carolina, Agnes moved from Halifax Co., VA, where the family lived, back to Hanover Co., VA, where they originally lived. (She was listed as Agness Spradley in the 1782 Hanover Co., VA Continental Census.) ESTATE NOTES: Jan 1754 Lunenburg Co, VA Attachment against the estate of Charles Spradling: Lunenburg Co, Court Order Books; Bk. 2-1/2 A, page 518: Nicholas Edmonds having obained an attachment against THE ESTATE OF Charles Spradlin for the sum of two pounds eight shillings and six pence ... Bk. 3 p43, May 1754 court: Edmonds vs. Spradlin sales returned (Note: Lunenburg Co., was divided on 27 Feb 1752 to make Halifax Co., VA.) Jonathan "John" was born between 1720 - 1728, Hanover Co., VA, died 1768 in Pittsylvania Co., VA (formed from Halifax Co. on 6 Nov 1766) wife, Mary Womack, born about 1728, VA. According to her uncle William Womack's old disputed will their children and grandchildren lived in Franklin Co., GA and parts west of there in 1803. The only child named was Oliver Spradling. John married Mary Womack in about 1747 in Amelia Co., VA. Court records state that Mary died in South Carolina. (See more information on Jonathan "John" Spradling) Gracie stated that the Bible was so old and brittle that it had to be wrapped in a blanket. She said that she intended to leave it to the Mormon Church. However, she died shortly thereafter at about age 93 and apparently never gave it to the Church. (Bible information from Marilou Werrell, a Chicago area genealogist) DNA results confirm this Old Bible information. Four descendants of Andrew B. "Bryant" Spradley matched a descendant of Charles II Spradling/Spradley and a descendant of William Spradley/Spradling, b. 1796-1800, AL, MS Territory exactly on all DNA markers. William was probably the son of Joseph Edgar's oldest son, Joseph. Circumstantial evidence supports that fact. These six descendants also matched sixteen other probable descendants of Charles and Agnes Spradling one genetic distance from an exact DNA match on FamilyTreeDNA. (Brothers can match this close.) Most were proven descendants of Charles and Agnes. Also, another Spradley researcher, Sarah, who spent a lot of time searching South Carolina records on the Alabama and Mississipi Spradleys supports much of this Bible information. Specifically, she stated that Bryant Spradley was Andrew Bryant Spradley born 1737, Revolutionary War Soldier. He had sons James born Jun or July 1766, SC, Andrew born 1767, SC, Dillard born 1774 (named after his mother's surname, she said) and Bryant, b. 1775, and two females without names listed. James sons were William, born 1790, James, born 1795, W. Charles, or Charles W., born 1803, Maning, born 1805, Anna Lou born 1806, (This information is from Marilou Werrell) Note: James also had a son Bryant Spradley, b. abt. 1792, Kershaw Co., SC, d. 3 May 1870 in Lowndes Co., AL. One of his descendants matched one genetic distance from an exact DNA match with the four descendants of Andrew Bryant Spradley, above. (Brothers can match this close) James also had another daughter, Narcissa, b. abt. 1793, Kershaw Co., SC, d. aft. 1880 in probably Montgomery Co., AL. Two descendants of the William Spradley, b. 1790, SC, above, matched three other descendants of James Spradley, b. 1766, SC, exactly on DNA Tests. SOME OF THE RECORDS BELOW ARE REPEATED MORE THAN ONCE BECAUSE THEY CAME FROM DIFFERENT SOURCES. "It was about 65 miles from where Charles Cawthon and the Spradlins lived in Hanover County. It seems like Charles Spradlin discovered this new expanding area (Amelia Co., VA) with inexpensive land first." [Cothern Clan by Jean (May) Mayo-Rodwick. The name was spelled Cawthon most of the time.] Charles Spradling appears on lists in Amelia County from 1743 to 1752. Sons, James and John, also appear on these lists. After this, Charles I moved to Lunenburg Co., VA and he died there before 1754. His family lived in Halifax Co., VA, near the Pittsylvania/Halifax Counties line. (Part of Lunenburg County later became part of Halifax Co., VA on 27 Feb 1752.) Son, Joseph Edgar, died in Halifax County in Sep 1767, and son, Jonathan "John" died in Pittsylvania Co., in 1768. (Pittsylvania County was formed from a section of Halifax County on 6 Nov 1766.) James, John's wife, and their families moved to North Carolina, and Charles II and Andrew "Bryant" moved to South Carolina. "Examining the Lunenburg County, Virginia Deed Books, I see many familiar names that will reappear in places where the Cawthons move to; Spradling, John Payne; Richard, William and Abraham Womack; John Mount and Thomas Warren all appear." [Cothern Clan by Jean (May) Mayo-Rodwick.] Charles Spradling, Sr. is on the list of pioneer settlers in the territory embraced within the bounds of Prince Edward County, Virginia, prior to the formation of that county. The Prince Edward county seat of Farmville was formed in 1754 from Amelia County. Charles lived with a Rottenberry family in Lunenburg County for about a year.(Note: A section of Lunenburg Co., VA became a part of Halifax Co., VA, in 1752.). Below is from COTHERN (Cawthon) CLAN by Jean (May) Mayo-Rodwick, Page 8 and 9 So after much digging and looking, I was elated to fiind a fragment of the Hanover County history in Norine Campbells Gregorys book. This was not even listed in the Index, but when I had turned to page 168 looking for a reference that was further down the page, I spotted a fragment of the Partridge Store Accounts of Hanover County on July 8, 1736 referring to George Cox and on September 16 1737 in the same account it stated pd. Yr. note to Charles Spradling. I celebrated as this put Charles in Hanover in 1737 before he turns up in Amelia County in 1743. Bingo! So now we have Charles Spradling in Hanover in the late 1730s. But did Charles Cawthon know Charles Spradling before he joined him in Amelia County in 1744? I believe he did. Read on It was about 65 miles from where Charles Cawthon and the Spradlins lived in Hanover County. It seems like Charles Spradlin discovered this new expanding area (Amelia Co., VA) with inexpensive land first. Then Charles Cawthon joins him by 1744. Amelia County was created in 1735. In Virginia, all males older than 16 years were tithable for defraying public, county and parish charges. A list of Tithables taken by William Clement Gent between Flatt Creek and Appomatix river for the year 1743 has Richard Womack 1, 2 Spradlins -Jas and Charles, and on page 252 is Paulin Anderson 4, Richard Anderson 2, and a Ellexsandor Womack 1. In 1744, on page 222 the list of Tithables taken by William Clement Gent between Flatt Creek and Appomatix River up to Great Saylor has Paulin Anderson, Richd Anderson, Page 294 lists James Spradling page 301 a Robert Mann. Then on page 303 begins the Tithables between Deep and Flatt Creeks for Captain John Nash and on one line was Charles Spradling, Charles Cauthon 2, page 304 has William Wammack 1, Isham Wammack, later on a Richard Wammack, Jackf 2; new line Matthew Wammack 1 Charles Spradling appears on the lists from 1743 to 1752. James Spradling appears 1743-1748. John Spradling, who married Eliza's sister Mary, appears on the 1747 to 1753 lists. Other Womacks in the neighborhood were Charles' (Cawthon) father-in-law, Abraham Sr. who was on the 1746-1750 lists. But he received a Patent in Amelia in July of 1745. He was constable for the years of 1747 and 1749. His son Abraham Jr. was there from 1746-1753. Thomas was on the 1751 and 1753 list. It was a year after Charles Cawthon arrived in Amelia County, before Abraham arrives with his good looking daughters. It looks like Charles and Eliza marry fairly soon after the Abraham Womacks arrive looking at the approximate ages that their children are born. John Spradlin and Mary Womack must have married after he arrived around 1747. Examining the Lunenburg County, Virginia Deed Books, I see many familiar names that will reappear in places where the Cawthons move to; Spradling; John Payne; Richard, William and Abraham Womack; John Mount and Thomas Warren all appear. On October 21, 1756, the court in Halifax County, Virginia ordered that William Eckols Jr., Charles Cawthron, and Daniel Williams, do view the best way for a road from Little Polecat Creek to the Courthouse. A month later on November 18, 1756 Daniel Williams is appointed surveyor of the road from Little Polecat Creek to this Courthouse. Ordered that Charles Cathron, Isham Womack, Moses Spradling, George Green, John Justice, Thomas Justice, Little berry Strange, John Scourlock, John Howell, and John Grizle be his gang and that they clear and keep the same in repair. Others in Halifax at this time appear to be Mary Spradlin(g) and her husband John who are Eliza's sister and brother-in-in law. John Warren and Hackley Warren Jr. are there and may be related to Thomas Warren who marries Charles daughter Hannah. [All the above is from the Cothern Clan, by Jean (May) Mayo-Rodwick. The name was usually listed as Cawthon.] Accounts from the Store of Thomas Partridge and Co., Hanover Co., VA, 1734-1756, Mr.Joseph Hicks. THIS IS THE LAST SPRADLING ENTRY IN THE AMELIA CO.COURT ORDER BK. 2 (per Paul Owen) -- Charles does not appear on the 1751 Amelia Co. tax list drawn up by Jno. Nash for the upper county. Does this fact and the 1751 court record mean that Charles has left the area or died? Maybe there is a Charles Jr. who witnessed the James Richey/William Craddock deed transfer. (Note: See Charles Estate notes above. Charles had moved to Lunenburg Co., VA and died there before Jan 1754. Yes, there was a Charles Jr., Charles II Spradling.) (per Paul Owens) - Charles Spradling is mentioned in the Index for the Lunenburg Co, VA Order Books 2.5-8 which cover 1752-1762 Halifax Co. formed from Lunenburg Co. in 1752 Bedford Co. formed from Lunenburg Co. in 1754 Pittsylvania Co. formed from Lunenburg in 1767 Census Notes: PrinceEdward Co, VA formed in 1752 from Amelia Co, VA.
