Note: According to his Old Bible, Joseph married Susanna Sneed and their children were Joseph, Judith, Obediah, and Jesse. His brothers were Jonathan 'John', wife unnamed in the bible, but other records prove that his wife was Mary Womack, James 'Jack', wife, Mary (Echols), Charles II, wife, Martha, and Andrew B. (Bryant) wife, unnamed in the Bible but other records prove she was Jane Dillard. Their sister was Matilda. Joseph's descendant, Gracie Muncin, owned the old Bible. After Joseph Edgar died, Susanna married William Echols and seven more children were born of this marriage. William was probably the brother of Mary (Echols) Spradling, James 'Jack' Spradling's wife. James' children named in the Bible are sons John, Charles, and daughter, Frances. James Jr. was not named, but he lived near him in Halifax Co., VA, and Wilkes Co., NC. He had moved to Claibone Co., TN and lived there when the Will was executed. According to his Revolutionary Pension Application, he was deeded land in trust so this may be the reason he was not named in James' Will. Jonathan 'John' married Mary Womack, and according to Mary's uncle William Womack's disputed will in 1803 their children and grandchildren lived in Franklin Co., GA and parts west of there. Only their son, Oliver, was named. Charles II's children named in the Bible were Agnes, Charles, and Anne. Gracie, owner of the Bible, stated that he had another unnamed son. He may have been James Spradley, b. 1756-1784, SC, wife, unknown, who was listed in the 1800 Kershaw Co., SC Census Records. He may have been Charles Spradlin(g), wife, Minnie Moore, who was born Abt. 1755 in Halifax Co., VA. One of his descendants matched one of Charles' descendants one genetic distance from an exact DNA match. A James was named in Charles' will, but it is not clear from the text of the will what his relationship was to Charles. Possible son, Charles, above was listed in the 1785 Halifax Co., VA Continental Census. Charles II had moved to South Carolina and died there in 1783 so this could not have been him. James 'Jack' Spradling's son, Charles, had already moved to North Carolina because his son James was born in Wilkes Co., NC in 1779. Andrew B. 'Bryant' Spradley's children named in the Bible were James, Andrew, Dilly (Dillard), and Briant (Bryant). His two daughters were not named. Other records establish that his wife was Jane Dillard. One of his daughters was Mary Jane 'Jennie' Spradley. Matilda was named in the Bible and also in her brother, Jonathan 'John' Spradling's 1768 Pittsylvania Co., VA Will. Charles and Andrew were also named in his will. [Bible Source - Marilou (Spradling) Werrell a Chicago area genealogist] DNA results confirm this old Bible information. Three descendants of Joseph Edgar Spradling matched three descendants of Andrew 'Bryant' Spradley, a descendant of Charles II Spradley/Sprading, and a descendant of William Spradley/Spradling, probable son of Joseph Edgar's son, Joseph, one genetic distance from an exact DNA match. (Brothers can match this close.) The descendant of William, above, was a perfect DNA match with four descendants of Andrew 'Bryant' and a descendant of Charles II. He matched sixteen other probable descendants of Charles and Agnes one genetic distance from and exact DNA match. William was probably the son of Joseph Edgar's son, Joseph. Circumstantial evidence supports that fact. Joseph moved from Halifax Co., VA to Greene Co., GA sometime after 1779. He sold his land there in 1798 and moved to Alabama, Mississippi Territory and was listed there in two records. A descendant of Joseph Edgar's son, Jesse, was an exact DNA match with three descendants of Obediah Spradlin(g), b. bet. 1760-1770, VA, who lived in the 1830 Hickman Co., TN Census, probably the son of James 'Jack' Spradling's son, Revolutionary Soldier John Spradling. James 'Jack' was Joseph Edgar's brother. The descendant of Jesse, above, matched a descendant of William, above, one genetic from an exact DNA match. Another descendant of William matched the descendant of Jesse, here, on 65 of 67 DNA markers on FamilyTreeDNA. The five descendants of Andrew Bryant, Charles and William, above, closely matched nine Spradlings, seven Spradlins, & seven other Spradleys on a DNA Project on FamilyTreeDNA. Most were proven descendants of Charles S. & Agnes Spradling. There is over a 99% probablility they had a common Spradley/Spradlin(g) ancestor. Recently, we have located some of the family of Joseph's brother, Jonathan 'John' Spradling. See Jonathan 'John' Spradling's and Charles I Spradling's notes. The descendant of Jesse, above, matched a descendant of Jonathan on 65 of 67 DNA markers on FamilyTreeDNA. Jonathan's descendant also matched a descendant of William, above, on 65 of 67 DNA markers. 5 Sep 1761 Halifax Co., VA.:Deed BK, 4, p472 Christopher Sneed sells to Joseph Spradling for 5 shillings, 100 acres, in Halifax, Co., on Mirey Creek, joining lines of Davis and Watkins. Watkins, Recorded 16, Feb. 1764 Halifax Co., Virginia Title: Joseph Spradling to Nathan Sullins Deed, Deed Books 2,3,4,5 and 6 1759-1767 32 Repository: Halifax CO., VA: 3-28-1766 Joseph Edger Spradling filed a will naming his Wife Susannah and his two sons Jesse and Obediah Spradling as his airs. If him and Susan passed before the children reached 21 they would stay with David Champness Terry. Signed Sealed Published and Declared in the presence of Theos A. Lacey Joseph Spradling L.S. Joseph Terry, John X Sneed. Recorded 25 Sept. 1767. (Note: Son, Joseph, was a witness to the will. He was not named as a beneficiary in the will. A beneficiary of a will may not witness the will.) Abbrev: Will of Joseph Spradling: Joseph Spradling weak of body but of sound mind. I lend to my beloved wife Susannah Spradling all the household furniture, the land where I now live to be divided between my two sons, Jesse Spradling and Obediah Spradling after Obediah reaches the age of 21 years, but my wife is to have the use of the said property during her life of widowhood. Should my wife die or remarry I appoint David Terry and Champness Terry to take my children and bring them up and teach them to read and write. Sealed Published and Declared in the presence of Theos A. Lacey Joseph Spradling L.S. Joseph Terry, John X Sneed. (Note: Since Joseph was not listed as one of the children bonded to David Terry he must have been the only child over 20. Joseph was a witness to his father's will, above. However, he was not named in the will. A witness may not be a beneficiary of the will. He was the 'qualified administrator' of his father's estate in 1768.) Normally, a person with a will does not have an administrator, he has an executor. James 'Jack' was Joseph Edgar's executor, however, he moved to North Carolina about this time, so apparently Joseph took over his duties, as a 'qualified administrator'. After Joseph Edgar died, Susanna married William Echols and they had seven children. So the Court awarded the children to David Terry. (See below) William Echols, here, was probably the brother of Mary (Echols) Spradling, wife of James 'Jack' Spradling. Pittsylvania Co: Virginia Court Sept. 25, 1767 ordered that the Church wardens of the Parish of Camden in this County do bind Jesse and Obediah and Judith Spradling, orphans of Joseph Spradling deceased to David Terry in such manner as the law directs) : 27 Nov 1767 Pittsylvania Co., VA.; Joseph Spradling ordered to be bound out again. Part of Halifax Co., VA became Pittsylvania Co., VA in 1768. The conditions of this Legal Judgment meant that Joseph would have been released from a Legal Ruling upon attaining his majority, the age of 21 as recognized by the Virginia Courts at that time. This means that Joseph Edgar's son Joseph, here, was born about 1746. What the legal ruling was is not known. He was not one of the children bound to David Terry in Joseph Edgar's will. He apparently was over age 21. 27 Feb 1768 Pittsylvania Co., VA.; Joseph Spradling declared qualified administrator of Joseph Spradling, Dec'd estate. Note: It's interesting that he was named Administrator of Joseph Edgar's estate. Joseph had a will and an administrator is appointed only if an individual dies intestate. Here, Joseph clearly had a will. Joseph Edgar's brother James 'Jack' was executor of his estate. It's possible that James 'Jack' moved to North Carolina and Joseph took over his duties as executor. That's probably what is meant by a 'qualified administrator'.. The Obediah Spradlng listed in the Wilkes Co., NC records was probably not Joseph's Obediah, but Obediah, b. bet. 1760-1770, who lived in the 1830 Hickman Co., TN Census and father, of James, Richard B., and Obediah Jr. Joseph's Obediah was listed in the 1800 Montgomery Co., KY Tax List, and his older children listed their birthstate as Kentucky in their records. He moved from Kentucky to Wilson Co., TN where he died in 1823.
