Note: Fourprobable descendants of James 'Jack' Spradling, matched four descendantsof Andrew Bryant Spradley, one descendant of Charles II Spradling/Spradley andone descendant of William Spradley/Spradling, probable son of Joseph Edgar'sson, Joseph, one genetic distance from an exact match on theSpradlin(g)-Spradley Project on FamilyTreeDNA. (Brothers can match thisclose) The six descendants of Andrew Bryant, Charles and William, above, closely matched sixteen Spradlings, Spradlins, & Spradleys on aDNA Project on FamilyTreeDNA. Most were proven descendants of Charles S. &Agnes Spradling. There is over a 99% probablility they had a commonSpradley/Spradlin(g) ancestor. Joseph EdgarSpradling's old Bible states that Charles S. Spradling, b. Abt. 1700, HanoverCo., VA, d. bef. 1754, Lunenburg Co., VA (Later, Halifax Co., VA), wife, Agnes, had sons, James 'Jack', Joseph Edgar, Jonathan "John", Charles II,Andrew B. and daughter, Matilda. Gracie Muncin, a descendant ofJoseph Edgar and owner of the old Bible stated that after the sons who died inVirginia and the others moved south, Agnes moved back to Hanover County fromHalifax County. (She was listed in the 1782 Hanover Co., VA Continental Censusas Agness Spradley). She stated that Charles II and Andrew B. (Bryant) moved toSC and Bryant and his descendants changed their name to Spradley. All descendants of Charles II's son, Charles III, are Spradley, too. (Bible information from Marilou Werrell, a Chicago area genealogist) (Note:Gracie said that there were no birthdates in the old Bible. She said that women always put dates in the bible don't they? Birthdates were obtained from other records. Gracie named some of the death dates.) The DNA matches above support this old Bible information. 1745 James Spradlin above Saylors Creek, Jno. Joseph Edgar's son, Joseph, was appointed 'qualified administrator' ofhis father's estate in Halifax Co., VA in 1768. Joseph Edgar died in 1767,leaving a will. An administrator is only appointed if the testator dies intestate. Since James 'Jack' was the executor of Joseph Edgar's estate and may have refused to act as executor or moved, Joseph was probably assigned his duties, and therefore a 'qualified administrator'. The only other John in this area was Jonathan 'John' Spradling, brother of James, here, who died 1768 in Pittsylvania Co., VA.) so it could not have been him. 15 May 1776 Halifax Co., VA Deed Book 10, p. 125; James Henry of Accomack Co., VA sells to James Spradling a tract on 2nd fork of Burchs Crk beginning on W. fork of JamesMoore's, Henry's Mill; 400 acres for 21 yrs. for 30 shillings per year. James Spradling must plant 500 peach trees and 500 apple trees, build a house and out buildings. Witn: Sam Slate, John Spradling, Charles Spradling.(John and Charles are likely James' sons.) Apr 1778 BurkeCo., NC; Burke Co., Land Records, James Spradling, 50 acres N. fork LittleRiver adjoining old survey. Witn: Adam Fullington, David Spradling. (David, here, may be the David in James 'Jack' Spradling's son, Charles' 1803 deed. See Charles' notes. Since Charles II's daughter Agnes' son,David, was too young to be this David, he may be the son of Jonathan 'John' andMary (Womack) Spradling, who was listed in the Franklin Co., GA 1806 Tax Listand probably later moved to Lawrence Co., AL where he was listed in the 1820 Alabama State Census. Several of his children have been identified. See Jonathan'John' and Mary Spradling's descendants.) JamesSpradling made an entry of 400 acres of land in Burke Co on Dec. 6, 1778. The survey not made until March 10, 1789, and William Sanders and O. Spradling werethe chain carriers. The land was on the Lower Little River near Pearson Knob. The land adjoined Enock Chapman, William Witten, William Sanders and Charles Forester. The Spradling family was a large family and came from Hailfax County, Virginia about 1778 and settled in Burke County on Lower Little River and Middle Little River. The United States Census 1790 shows James Spradling, Jr., Charles Spradling, and Jesse Spradling. John Spradling and David Spradling were also shown in Burke and Wilkes Co. North Carolina. (Note: John and David in Burke Co., here, were likely sons of Jonathan 'John' and Mary (Womack) Spradling.) JohnSpradling (James' son) was a Rev. War soldier and served under Colonal Holmesand Captain Charles Forester. James Jr. Spradling was also a Revolutionary WarSoldier. His pension record states he married Sarah Scott on January 11,1783. There were two Jesse Spradlings in Wilkes Co., NC. JosephEdgar's son, Jesse, was probably one of them, and the other Jesse, younger thanJoseph Edgar's Jesse, was listed in the 1800 Wilkes Co., NC Census on the samepage as Revolutionary War Soldier, John Spradling. Joseph's Jesse hadmoved to Sumner Co., TN and was listed in several records there before1800. Also, the younger Jesse's children's ages in the 1800 Wilkes Co.,NC Census record did not match the ages of Joseph Edgar's son, Jesse'schildren. The Spradlingsbought and sold land. James bought the 290 acre tract of William Lenoir and sold it to Thomas Scott on Feb 5, 1793. Early in 1800 the Spradlings (JamesJr., John and Obediah, and Joseph Edgar's son Jesse who moved before 1800) sold their land in Burke and Wilkes Counties and moved to Tennessee. The exodus ofthe pioneers in the early 1800's was tremendous and the limited amount ofbottom land on the Lower Little River and Middle Little River makes itunderstanable why the pioneers would leave the rough and hilly land ofAlexander County to go west for better land. This James was probably Charles and FrancesSpradling's son, James, b. 1779. His mother was probably listed with him,age 26-44. Her husband, Charles, died in 1796. (FromMaryAnne McCullough) The ObediahSpradlin(g), above, was probably Obediah, born between 1760-1770, VA, likelythe son of Revolutionary Soldier John Spradling. Obediah's son, James, entered the War of 1812 in Warren Co., TN, where John later moved to and diedin 1835. Obediah probably lived there given that James was only about 18years old when he entered the War in September 1814. This could not havebeen Obediah, son of Joseph Edgar, because he was listed in an 1800 MontgomeryCo., KY Tax list and later moved to Wilson Co., TN where he died in 1823. There were twoJames Spradlings listed in the 1790 Wilkes Co., NC Census. James 'Jack'and son, James, Jr. Listed in the1800 Wilkes Co., NC Census, p. 483. This Jesse wasobviously not Joseph Edgar Spradling's son, Jesse, because he had moved toSumter Co., TN before this date and his family's ages do not fit the Jesse inthe 1800 Wilkes Co. Census, above. This Jesse may have been RevolutionarySoldier John Spradling's son. Note that he was listed on the same page asJohn in this census record. Very few of John's children have been clearlyidentified
