Note: Virginia Early Census Index: Halifax Co., Continental Census; Jesse Spradling, Halifax Co., VA 1782. Birthdate: 1750 according to Vol. 165, Page 379. (Heads of Fams. at the first U.S. census. Va. By U.S. Bureau of the Census. Washington, 1908. (p. 89) (Note: Jesse was probably born after 1751, see the information below.) According to the 1767 Halifax Co., VA Court order binding Jesse, Obediah, and Judith to David Terry, Jesse would have been under 21 years of age at this time. During this period a person over the age of 16 was considered an adult and was required to pay Tithables (Taxes), could enter a contract, and witness a document. Jesse was probably under age 17. Listed next to Jonathan Colquitt in the 1785 Halifax Co., VA Continental Census, p. 89. Elizabeth's brother, Ransome, was listed below Jesse and Jonathan, above Jesse. Charles Spradling, probable son of either Jonathan "John" Spradling or Charles II Spradley/Spradling was listed on the same page. General Notes: MARRIAGE: 5 March Virginia, Halifax Co. by Rev. Listed in the 1850 Wayne Co., KY Census, Division 1, p.3 304B, age 106, NC. It's unlikely he was this old, but he was probably close to 100 years old and born in VA. See the Early Census Index, VA Continental Census above regarding his birthdate and the 1767 Halifax Co., VA Court order binding he, Obediah, and sister Judith to David Terry. According to this record he is under age 21 in 1767. In this period a person over age 16 was considered an adult and was required to pay Tithables (Taxes), could enter a contract, and witness a document. Jesse was probably under age 17 in 1767 since he was bound along with Judith, b. 1760, and Obediah, b. 1763. Source of Marriage Record: Virginia Marriages to 1800 (Database online) Provo, UT, Ancestry.com 1997 Alternate Marriage Record: 8 Sep 1775, Tylers Quarterly Historical & Genealogical Magazine, Vol. 1, Albidgton-Gerlache (1981), p. 413. One descendant of Jesse, here, was an exact match with three descendants of Obediah Spradlin(g), b. bet. 1760-1770, VA, probably the son of James "Jack" Spradling's son, Revolutionary Soldier John Spradling. Three descendants of Jesse, here, were one genetic distance from an exact match with three descendants of Andrew "Bryant" Spradley, one descendant of Charles Spradley/Spradling, and one descendant of William Spradley/Spradling on a DNA test on the Spradey/Spradlin(g) DNA Project on FamilyTreeDNA. Andrew "Bryant" and Charles were sons of Charles and Agnes Spradling, according to an old family Bible. William Spradley/Spradling was probably the son of Joseph Edgar Spradling's son, Joseph, who moved from Halifax Co., VA to Greene Co., GA sometime after 1779, and later moved to Alabama, Mississippi Territory sometime after 1798.
