On a certificate from The Department of Commerce, Breau of the Census in Washington and titled 'Notification of Birth Registration" Elise Theresa Authement's birth is registered with the Registrar of Vital Statistics of New Orleans, LA. She was named Theresa Authement and born on April 15, 1931 in Little Cailliou, LA the daughter of Wallace Authement and Fabiola Babin. It was apparently after 1931 when Wallace moved his family from Little Caillou into Houma.
Mom grew up on Peach Street in Houma, Terrebonne Parish, LA. She said that she could remember having to do her homework by the light of a kerosene lamp. She went to Houma Jr. High School and Terrebonne High School as a teenager but she quit school in the 9th grade.
On a Certificate of Confirmation dated January 19, 1949, it states that Theresa Elise Authement who's parents are Wallace Authement and Fabiola Babin was confirmed on the 1st day of May 1944 in St. Francis de Sales Church in Houma, LA. Confirmed by the most Rev. J. F. Rummel S.T.D.; Confirmation Name Theresa; Sponsor Melvin Henry Authement. It was signed by Rev. L.M. Pooley, assistant pastor.
I don't know if she had other jobs but her last job prior to marriage was working as a waitress at Peco's resturant on Barrow Street in Houma. That's where she met Dad.
Elise Theresa Authement m. 30 January 1949 Charles Ray Fatchett in Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Houma, Terrebonne Parish, LA. They were married by Rev. Anthony Wegu......illegible. Whitnesses were Alan J. Authement, Nettie R. Bergeran and Ralph Authement.
They had their wedding reception in the home of her parents on Peach Street.
I remember a time when I was a small child, we along with Aunt Lottie and her family were at Grandma and Grandpa's. Everybody was in the back yard. I or one of my sisters misbehaved and Mom swatted our backside a couple of times. Uncle Dewey's big dog didn't like that and bit Mom on the back of her leg. Memories don't take me any further of that incident. I don't know if she had to go to the doctor or what.
Mom always took good care of her family. In the summer we all helped put up bushels of veggies that we would all go to Bayou Blue and pick. She would also visit Mr. Wallace Dupre on Bayou Blue and buy milk fresh from his cow. She cooked, did laundry, kept the house spotless and was always there for us when we came home from school and she was mediator when we got in hot water with Dad.
Speaking of laundry, with six children, Mom was always doing cloths. Some of us were bed wetters so beds were stripped and washed everyday. Mom was the envy of the neighbors with this wonderful high tech cloths line Dad made for her. The lines could be raised and lowered with a system of ropes and pulleys. Those lines were filled every day that the sun shined.
Now, having raised 3 children of my own, it gives me a totally new perspective of Mom. She raised 6 children. How did she do it!
Raising those 6 kids came with a price. Mom was in and out of mental institutions since I was a little girl. She had two nervous breakdowns and came close to having more.
Mom didn't have any hobbies that I can remember. When we were little she used to sew cloths for us but as each child came along she had less and less time for that. Mom's life was her family and her home.
Her personality was a lot like her brother, Allen. Kind of quiet and gentle with a good sense of humor. I remember pictures of her when she was first married to Dad. She was a Looker! Long, black natural curly hair and when she smiled her eyes would crinkle up so much they almost disappeared.
She died too young. Submitted by Cynthia Fatchett Daigle
