Note: Stella said she was age 5 when her parents seperated. She did not recall the name of her father's parents. Her mother's grandfather married twice and had a total of 22 children between the two wives. ************ May, 2005 Lloyd, Stella's nephew by marriage, made her a very happy woman. He built some shutters for her house so she and Richard don't have to struggle boarding up their windows for hurricanes. ********** July, 2005, Thursday Stella is about 80 years old now but you'd never know it to look at her. She still tackles her yard every day, weeding, pruning, planting and havesting. She lives for her plants. She loves to watch things grow and she especially enjoys odd plants. If you do a favor for Stella, she will heap the bounty of her garden upon you. It's her way to show that she appreciates whatever you did for her. ******** Aug. 25, 2005 I guess her age is catching up with her because she's been under the weather lately. She's been in and out of doctor's offices this week and had a few test done. She was hospitalized at one point and spent Hurricane Katrina in the hospital. Her daughter, Linda, was with her. When she came home, she was on oxygen, slept on a hospital bed in the living room. Hospice was called in. *************** Sept. 21, 2005 Stella was diagnosed with cancer about three weeks ago. It was already in an advanced stage. Her daughter came from Kentucky and cared for her at Stella's home. Stella died in her home about 4:30 am today. God was merciful in that she didn't have to suffer long. It was about 30 days from diagnosis to death. Her daughter and one grandson were with her. The other grandson was in route from California, and her son in law was enroute from Kentucky, both due to arrive that night, but she couldn't hang on any longer. ********************** Stella R. Savoie, 81, a native of New Orleans and resident of Houma, died at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to funeral time Friday at St. Louis Catholic Church. Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. She is survived by her husband, Richard A. Savoie; one daughter, Linda A. Morton; two grandchildren, Heath R. Elsensohn and Jason T. Morton; and one great-granchild, Nathan Dean Elsensohn. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Dozilla Kraemer Legnon; and one brother, Lawrence Eschette. She was retired and a parishioner of St. Louis Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and goldfish. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Bayou Region Hospice. Samart Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Houma, LA; Courier September 22. 2005 12:00AM Cynthia's note: The above services were canceled due to Hurricane Rita. They were later rescheduled for Nov. 5, 2005. Note also that Peter Legnon was Stella's step father. Her birth father was Milton John Eschete. ***************** At Stella's request, her remains were cremated and her ashes were spread beneath a huge oak tree in her yard that she herself had planted into a lovely garden. There is a bench there and footstones, pine needle mulch covers the gound everywhere. She is at peace there among her beloved flowers and plants. It was an honor for me to be a part of that ceremony. We had a tiny bottle of holy water from Our Lady of Lordes Catholic Church (New Orleans) and we sprinkled it over the ground and prayed asking God to make holy the ground where her ashes were spread.
