a. Note:   Editor of Oregon Journal Worked for forest Service from 1 June 43 until into the fall. Seemed to enjoy the work more than at the newspaper
  Diary notes: 1942 - Stated that Emily does a good job with the household expenses on minimal income. He was earning $66/week for 48hr week 1943 - Upset that Emily did laundry on Sunday in spring entry, but no comment about frequently doing laundry on Sunday in the fall. Children went to Sunday School regularly, Emily went occasionally to church, but Fred did not and went to work at the paper every Sunday about midday. 1943 - Fred stated that Emily was the strong partner with a cheerful outlook, ever optimistic. 1943 - Fred recorded that he was a heavy smoker and very moody (sometimes depressed for several days) 1943 - He hoped his children would not be cursed by failure, or rather "refusal to face reality and fear of everything, coupled with a too vivid imagination, (that)often nearly wrecked me". He stated this was still true of him then at age 50.
  Relations: Aunt Aggie Barnett had daughter Mabel who married Henry Dresser. Cousin's father's place was 80 ac. in Clackamas Hills above Parkplace - where Fred's sisters lived when they first came to Oregon in 1908
