a. Note:   Immigrated 1885 had 7 children Came to America from Scotland, a tiny petite woman with a Scottish Brogue. Wore dresses to the floor, long hair pulled into bun. Taught her daughter "proper behavior for young ladies". Husband, Thomas disappeared, never came back. Later she married James Cairns who had 5 children (3 boys 2 girls). Raising a total of 11 children in a large 2-story farmhouse outside Streator on land owned by her well-to-do farmer husband. Made one or more trips back to her homeland to visit. CAIRNS IS LAID AT REST - IMPRESSIVE RITES ARE CONDUCTED IN HOME OF DECEASED SOUTH OF TOWN. Impressive rites were conducted over the body of Mrs. James Cairns at her home southwest of Streator yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. the Rev. E. W. Smith wpeaking words of comfort and consolation to the children, husband, close relatives and friends. Rev. Smith and Mrs. P.J. McMullen sang :Saved by Grace" after which Mrs. McMullen sang, :The Old Rugged Cross" The Pall bearers were James, William, David, Thomas and John McDonald and John Cairns, a step-son. Interment took place in the Moon Cemetery where a short prayer was said by Rev. Smith, who with Mrs. McMullen again sang, :Abide With Me.: The many beautiful floral tributes sent by admiring friends and relatives were in charge of Mesers. and Mesdames Jack Lyons and Robert Earp and Misses Catherine Soulsby and Virginia and Merian McDonald. Those attending from a distance were Mr and Mrs David McDonald and daughter of Detroit, Mich, William McDonald, Austin, Minn, Mrs. Alvin Eaton, Fond Du Lac, Wis, Mr & Mrs Jack Lyons, and Harold McDonald, Chicago, and friends from the neighboring towns of Long Point, Leonore and other places. NOTES: death cert. shows dob as Oct 19, 1856?
