Note: A new tribe of Germanic invaders known as the Lombards invaded Italy from the north in 568. They established a kingdom that endured until it was conquered in 774 by Charlemagne, king of the Franks, a Germanic people. In one year they captured all of northern Italy except for the city of Pavia, which fell in 572.
Among the Lombards, power was exercised by a king and his dukes in their respective city-states. The most eminent of the Lombard kings was Liudprand, who ruled from 712 until 744. Liudprand, who greatly expanded and strengthened the Lombard kingdom, attacked Rome twice. Both times, however, the pope persuaded Liudprand, a pious Catholic, to retreat.
The Lombards converted to orthodox Christianity in the late 7th century. When they attempted to take over papal territories in Italy, Pope Adrian I asked Charlemagne for help. Charlemagne laid siege to the Lombards and restored the papal territories. Already king of the Franks, Charlemagne became the Lombard king as well. The part of northern Italy named Lombardy is a reminder of the medieval Lombard kingdom.
