Transcribed by Michelle Lombard DeAngelo from the typed copy of the announcement.
Frank is a member of the Shellbacks, a distinguishment sailors recieve upon crossing the Equator at sea (see Harry John DeVoto SR's notes for a discription of the ceremony). Michelle DeAngelo is in possession of his orginial certificate. Copies have been sent to her siblings. He crossed the Equator on October 11th, 1943, on the USS George F. Elliot. The longitude of crossing and destination have been censored. Frank was a captain at the time of crossing. Research on the USS George F. Elliot shows that the ship sunk in 1942, however. Frank never talked about his time serving in WWII to his grandchildren. MLD 8-4-08
