Dear Sister: You must excuse me for not writing to you sooner. I have been very sick and Josephine was very sick too. We wrote to you folks about 6 weeks ago and got no answer. We moved our mother and sister from Rose Hill to Calvary. Our poor mother's coffin was all rotten and nothing left of her but a few bones and our sister's coffin was all right for it was iron and she turned into stone. I will send you some of our mother's hair. I took some of her hair that was buried nineteen years. It turned red. Our sister's coffin we did not open but we was sure she turned into stone. It is something very strange. Something that very seldom happens. Our mother was 35 years old when she died. She was born in the year of 1829, August 3rd. She died in the year 1864, January 23rd. Our sister Mary was nine years old when she died. She was born in the year of 1862, August 13th. She died in the year of 1871, December 8th. Our father was 48 years old when he died. He was born in the year of 1824, September 30th. He died in the year of 1873, May 21st. This is the true record of their births and deaths taken from their coffins and headstones by me in person. We and everybody else that seen our sister's body will testify that she turned into stone. We send our best regards to Louis and a kiss to little Joe and little Fatty. The city is going to raise the saloon license from $52 to $500 and $150 for to sell beer and wine alone. Tell Louis that if I owe him anything to let me know and I will pay him as soon as I can. Me and Josehine send our regards to you, Louis and all enquiring friends. Give a kiss to the little ones for us and God bless you all. It was May the 9th that we moved our mother and sister. We remain as ever Anthony DeVoto Josephine DeVoto Direct your letters to Anthony DeVoto 568 1/2 S. State St., Chicago, IL Please write soon as you get this.
