PASSING OF A BEAUTIFUL LIFE Her Life Mission Ended at a Ripe Old Age
The death of "Mother" Mulvane as she was lovingly known, marks the passing of a noble woman. Of a singularly broad and Christian spirit, of sound business judgment, it may be said of Mary D. Mulvane tht she make better and happier everything she touched. Nothing that tended to improve the social and moral life of the community in which she lived escaped her attention, and at 86 her sympathies for every movement for the betterment of mankind were as sympathetic, and as keenly intelligent as ever.
The generous charities which marked her life, and made her known beyond the confines of the state, we shall not refere to in detail. It is known that they reached thousands of dollars, but they were given with an unostentatious quietness which shrank from pulbicity. The church to which she belonged; the needy colleges of the connection; and scores of individuals whose wants exceeded slender incomes need not be told that the generous hand of this good woman is stilled in death.
Mother Mulvane passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary J. Dent, on Main St, this city, Wdnesday last at 1 o'clock PM. More thatn half a century earlier her husband had built this same home, and under its hospitable roof her children had grown to man's an dwoman's estate. From this home she had watched the increasing prosperity of her sons, and to the old home they returned to perform the last sacred rite for the mother who had done so much for them.
Her death was due to the infimities inseparable from old age. At 86 yrs, 4 mos, and 1 day she lay down to a quiet sleep, having first fiven specific directions concerning little souveniers for personal friends, and having added minute details concerning her funeral. Death had no terrors for her, and she prepared for the long journey with thte same composure that had marked her periodic visits to her sons.
her father was the Rev. William Ross, a missionary to the Delaware Indians, and it is problable that from this pious ancestor she imbibed the rugged Christain virtues that characterized her life. In 1817 when she was but 4 years of age she removed with her parents to Stone Creek. Pennsylvania and Ohio were practically a wilderness then, and the journey was made over the mountains, and throug virgin forests in a onehorse cart. Some of the difficulties of the journey will be understood when it is known that there were 6 children in the family, the youngest being a babe of 6 weeks. Long before any chruches had been erected in this vicinity, her fahter was accustomed to preach to the settlers under the trees that grow on the State road just east of the C O D Fair Grounds.
In 1834 she married David Mulvane, a young merchant of this town. Most of the business of that early day was done just west of ex-Mayor Crater's present resicence, and in this vicinity was the Mulvane home where their nine children were born.
Rev. S A Fisher, a much beloved former pastor, assisted by Rev. C E Sheppard, at the request of the deceased, preached the funeral sermon. The large congregation, the preacher's toucing eulogy, the hushed attention, all testified to the noble character of Mary D. Mulvane. After all, the most cheering reflection is the good of such benefactors lives after them. As time rolls by the memory of their deeds become as a fragrant incense enriching, enlarging and ennobling the whole community. A rightous life is a beautiful thing. It never dies
