Note: Not listed in 1880 census with other family members. For twenty-one years, Gertrude Torrey looked after the physical needs of the girls in the chapter house. She was a dignified hostess, a solicitous mother and advisor, a household organizer and planner for an ever changing family. What a variety of experiences and problems as well as joys must have claimed her time over this long period. From a letter written by Marie Coons Weigel, Manhattan Alumane Club, asking Kansas Betas to contribute to a memorial to Gertrude and another woman.
