  Sergt William P. Mulvane
Sergeant William Phineas Mulvane, Civil War veteran of Co. D, 52nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, died at his home in this city last Tuesday at the age of 81. His illness was due to advance years and had continued througout the winter.
He was the son of David and Mary Ross Mulvane, pioneers of this region, and had spent practically his entire life in the town. In June 1870 he was married to Emma Gardner, who with their children, Stanley, Roy and Mrs Daisy Prosser, survive him. These with the three grandchildren, Warren Prosser of Cleveland, Herbert Prosser and Mrs. kathene Prosser Thompson of this city, comprise the family.
Of Mr. Mulvane's brothers, David resides at Los Angeles, CA, George W. is a well known banker in this city. Joab lives at Kansas City. The only sister, Mrs. Mary Dent lives in Newcomerstown, a stone's throw from the spot where she was born.
On August 22, 1862, Comrade Mulvane was mustered into Col. Dan McCook's 52nd Ohio Regiment along with a number of his Newcomerstown companions, and on the 25th they crossed the Ohio at Cincinnati 1,019 strong. Almost immediately they plunged into an active campaign of battle, and were not to see the Ohio again until June 8, 1865, when they recrossed the river with only 294 of those same brave boys. A bloody war had swallowed the remainder.
Comrade Mulvane participated heroically in th battles of Perryville, Chicamauga, Peach Tree, Kenesaw MT, Jonesboro, as well as in all Sherman's subsequent engagements from Atlanta to the sea.
It is worthy of note that his life came to a close on the anniversary of the sureender of Johnson's army - April 26, 1865. On the eventful day 56 years ago at Raleigh, comrade Mulvane's chief thought was of [his] Newcomerstown home far away. The great rebellion had been crushed, and he and his comrades were soon to migle with the old friends of the beloved Tuscarawas.
Almost immediately after returning home he resumed his buiness of merchandising, and only discontinuing it to become an active member of the Oxford Banking Company. For some years the infirmities of his advanced years have been such as to prevent activities in business lines.
